It was sad to see that the once very upscale Plaza hotel is now just a basic Marriott. There’s nothing wrong with Marriott, but this hotel is supposed to be one of the top and it’s not. They gutted the lobby, so there was no place to sit and wait for friends or to relax Instead they put in restaurant and bar that could some time be very loud. Food in the restaurant was average when it used to be gourmet before the takeover. Room was very clean, but no really comfortable chairs. The desk chair did not have rollers on it so it would not slide out on the carpet, but had to be lifted up and moved if you wanted to sit in it. The sofa was too firm and had no armrests. The bed was too firm for mine and my husband’s taste. I had to bring a chair from the patio to sit comfortably in the room. There was a refrigerator in the room, but it was so narrow from front to back, and could not put a plastic container of watermelon that I got at H-E-B in the refrigerator. No feeling of upscale accommodation here. All the staff were great. They made the stay much more pleasurable than it would’ve been. The day we checked out, there were quite a few people checking out (Sun.) and there was a wedding shower so I guess a lot of people using valet parking. We called ahead to get a porter to come to our room because we both have a disability so we needed help. After 30 minutes they never came and then more than 30 min to get the car after paying $59 a day valet. Won’t stay again.

We had no clue we were going to be charged $150 deposit after I already paid for my room, then I was given a $25 card “COMPLIMENTARY” for something at the cafe and ended up having to pay for what I ordered plus another $25 “destination fee” whatever that means. This hotel poked our eyes out left and right with over charges & staff giving false information and about of miscommunication from the moment we stepped foot in the hotel.

Beautiful property. Excellent bar and restaurant on site. Clerk at check in was very short with us and a bit snobby. Room was gorgeous. Mostly clean but had a towel smeared with makeup. Robes need updating, very rough. Valet parking is $59. Not ideal but expected at this kind of property. A bit of a walk if staying on further end from elevators.
