I called and asked for a room in the new building. On arrival, I was told we were in the old building and no other rooms were available. I even asked if I could pay for a newer, updated room. Room was dark and dingy.

Poor - Left our trays from the room next door for over 18 hours. Excellent - Facilities and dinner at Statehouse restaurant.

4:00 check-in? That’s late, but given that our room wasn’t available until 6:00 pm, 4:00 sounds accommodating. We got to the hotel at 4:30, and we were told that our lake view room wasn’t ready. I asked how much longer it would take, but the girl at the front desk didn’t know and said she’d call me when the room was ready. No one offered to take our luggage, so we proceeded to drag it down the stairs out to the terrace, which had live music. Everyone on the terrace stared at us with our luggage like we were homeless, which I’m fine with. At 6:00 (hour and a half later) I still had not received a call about our room being ready. I went to the front desk and quickly realized that they forgot to call us, as the room was now suddenly ready as soon as I approached the counter. I honestly think we could’ve sat on the patio with our luggage all night and the front desk staff would’ve never known (or cared, or both...) / remembered to call us for check-in. I wouldn’t expect this type of experience from a Holiday Inn, much less what is supposedly the best hotel in Madison. Consequently, we missed our dinner reservation, and received no apology or room discount. “If you build it, they will come” may apply to this hotel. However, if the service situation isn’t addressed promptly, no one will be coming back. It’s as if the employees know they’re at this incredible property and have this arrogance that they don’t need to match high quality service with the beautiful location.
