I had a good stay at Extended Stay America. The room was simple but very clean, and the hotel was very pet friendly. The pet fee was also very reasonable. A nice, easy place to stay.

I imagine homeless shelters have a more updated rooms. Carpets were tattered and stained, walls peeling paint, sinks with cigarette burns, plumbing and faucets rusty and worn. Appliances look like they were donated from Salvation Army store. Mattresses worn like an elephant slept on them. Probably hasn't been updated since Reagan was President
