"I love off-the-beaten path accommodations, especially ones with history, so the Shady Lady was at the top of my list for this trip to see the Death Valley superbloom! It was a little farther away from Beatty than I'd originally thought (my fault for not mapping it accurately), but its remote location made for great stargazing and put me near some far-flung areas that I'd wanted to explore anyway. I was so grateful that my host Nigel met me at my car upon my late arrival, since it was so dark out, and he made me feel right at home by showing me all around and making sure I could find my way to my room and to the common areas. I absolutely loved communal breakfast in the morning and hanging out with the peacocks outside! Very quiet at night, friendly atmosphere. Among the need-to-know items are that the rooms don't lock from the outside—so while you can lock them while you're in the room, you're leaving your stuff unsecured while you're away. It was totally fine in the end, but I'm a city girl so it made me a little nervous. There are also dogs and cats (a sweetie indoor one and at least one feral one outside) which was a MAJOR plus for me, but beware if you have allergies or don't like to mingle with other people's pets."

"The location was good and the room was clean and the front desk staff that checked us in were very nice. That’s the only good things I can say. Our room was as bright as the sun when the lights were turned off as it faced north with a parking lot and no blackout curtains. We were on the first floor and there is no sound proofing between floors. We heard every footstep from the second floor. It was so noisy. The upstairs room woke up at 3:30 am. Two people took showers and the noise from the showers sounded like a tornado going through the hotel. I’m not making this up. Also the wind was blowing outside and the windows and doors aren’t properly weatherstripped and it whistles like a train non-stop. If you just need a place to shower, this motel is ok. But if you want a restful night sleep, I don’t recommend it. "

"We had a great stay at the Desert Retreat. So very quiet and comfortable - beds were just right and communication with the host went smootly.The perfect place to unwind after a busy day in Death Valley. We like to cook and found all we needed to prepare meals and the outdoor grill was perfect. We travel to DV often and will book again on our next visit."

"The host was great and very welcoming. Went above and beyond to help us out by making us some food because we were arriving late at night. Even the breakfast was delicious. Gave us a b&b feel. The second bedroom did not have a shower even though listing said otherwise but it wasn't a big deal. It was a great experience and had a lot of fun talking to Sunny! Will definitely go back there!"
