The nearest Travelocity accommodation is the Hotel Futaba, Niigata, which is 13 miles (20 kilometers) from the downtown area of Sakae. Or instead, you could head to the Nozawa Grand Hotel, located in Nagano, which is 8 miles (13 kilometers) away.

The Jinpyokaku is located 13 miles (21 kilometers) outside central Sakae. An alternative place to stay is the Issano Komichi Biyuno Yado, which is approximately 13 miles (22 kilometers) away. Two other Travelocity-listed places to stay in the Sakae area include the Shima Onsen Kashiwaya Ryokan and the Shiga Park Hotel.

When you've seen Sakae, schedule in a little time to investigate the other cultural and scenic attractions of the Chubu area. Chubu is well known for beaches, mountains, active volcanos and rolling hills, and other interesting tourist destinations include ruins, castles and traditional villages. Popular pastimes in this particular area of Japan include snowboarding, skiing and cross-country skiing.

Hakuba is 40 miles (67 kilometers) to the west of Sakae and is where you'll find Happo-one Adam Gondola and Hakuba Green Sports Park. Get your fix of sport by making the trek to Nagano Olympic Stadium, situated 30 miles (50 kilometers) to the southwest of Sakae. "Do not pay for the kaiseki breakfast and lunch it is really not worth it. The onsens and the staff are great. But avoid paying for the diner and breakfast. When we pay more than 500 usd per night we expect the possibility to choose a vegetarian meal. But they just refused. They offer a list of 28 ingredients that you have to remove all together (including sea food, eggs, milk....and some meat). And even if you order this, they still can serve you lamb or duck... It is not my first high end ryokan but it is th first time i see this kind of process.... The kaiseki is a big part of the price we pay and it is definetely not worth it..."
