Well worth it!

I LOVE this hotel! It's small, VERY convenient, comfortable, and clean. It's 2 blocks from Union Square, so it's easy to catch a bus, BART, and/or sightseeing buses. It's close to Chinatown, there see lots of places to eat around, and I felt very safe in the hotel itself as well as walking around in that area by myself. My view wasn't great, but very few rooms come with a view, and I didn't spend a lot of time in my room. This is an old hotel so the bathrooms, showers and sink areas are compact. I love the old hotel look, the beautiful staircases, the tile lobby, the high ceilings, etc. The staff was great, it was , inexpensive, and I would absolutely stay there again as well as recommend it to my friends and family!

Terrible

Cons: No free Internet, no security, odd smelling, old
This was seriously the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. As a woman staying in a large city by myself I was quite anxious the whole time. There was absolutely no security, the window in the room didn't even have screen, no air conditioning and the radiator (if that's what it was) was falling off the wall.

Don't even try... it's a nightmare

Pros: Close restaurants, Free Internet
Cons: Noisy, bed bug, no a/c
I did try this hotel since it was close to union square which easy walking around market street and take the tram but that are all the good things about this hotel. I got a room which is next to the elevator which has no A/C and the air circulation is very bad. Since there is not A/C then I have no choice but to open the window to let the air inside for circulate. Not only that, but I woke up at the night because I feel that something bit me at the arm. Yes it is a beg bug !!!. I could not sleep after all. So please stay away from this hotel and don't even try or take a chance to get a room with the cheap price. It is not worth it !!!!

Great Location & Value, Poor Accommodations

Pros: Close restaurants, friendly staff
The room was very inexpensive and the location was very close to plenty of shopping, restaurant, theater, and transportation options, but the room was extremely small and crowded with large furnishings—so much so that it was often difficult for two people to move around. It's an old, haphazardly renovated building, and as such, had many of the unfortunate characteristics one would expect—tiny and slow elevator, crooked doors, cracked plaster, loose door handles, etc. With a little more attention to detail, it could have been quite charming, but in actuality looked slightly neglected. The bright side was a very small, but friendly and helpful staff. For a cheap room and good location, it's definitely worth it, but keep your expectations low.

dirty and noisy

i appreciate that this is a budget hotel, but it was very dirty. had no ice machine, no suitcase racks to keep your luggage off the floor. room and bathroom very small. the worst part is that there is a very rowdy nightclub several doors down, and the kids were screaming and yelling until 3 0clock in the morning. no one slept. also lots of street noise. also, we were told when we booked the room that there was parking for $* a day close by. turned out to be $* a day. only good thing was the location. excellent location where you can easily take public transportation anywhere you want to go. also many good resturants close by.

excellent location in Union Square

I really enjoyed my stay in San Francisco and this hotel is great for the price we paid which was inexpensive compared to most of the hotels in that area..the rooms seemed fairly clean and the desk clerk was nice, but only I found that the room was a bit small with very small bathroom sink, and the hallway did smell then again that is a very old building, but that was ok if u are just staying for 1-2 nights and most of the time we were gone shopping, exploring and only came back to sleep for few hours. I would come back to this hotel for this price again.

Horrible place to stay, though strategic location

Good location, just next to Union Square. However, I was so regret to end up in this hotel when I first checked in. The room was very smelly and stuffy. No air conditioning. I have to open up all the windows to get some fresh air. Room was dirty where you can see mould over the ceiling and cracked paint. It was very noisy at night, poor sound proof door. I would rather sleep in the SFO airport than in this disgusting room.

Family stay at the Union Square Plaza Hotel

Very old, small, quaint hotel. Friendly and accomodating personnel who try very hard to make it a pleasant stay at the hotel. Rooms are small, but clean and comfortable,? windows stick, no air conditioning (hard on guests located in the central row of rooms-no free flow of cooling breeze from outside).Hotel is in a great location, close to the cable car turnaround on Powell, the BART station,? Union Square, and Chinatown. Numerous restaurants closeby for the many different tastes. For the bargain minded visitor its a good deal.

Worst Hotel I Have Been In

I knew this was going to be a bad experience when I was given a key to a room that had not been cleaned. I started to leave but the housekeeping lady was nice enough to get right on it. I actually sat there while she vacuumed and emptied the trash.\n\n Two light bulbs over the bathroom vanity were missing. The handle that rolls the window inward to close was missing. I managed to pull it to with my hands but it was never really closed. There is no climate control in the room. The room was in need of a paint job. I watched her put sheets on the bed that I am positive have seen better days. They were so thin, you could see through them.\n\n I stayed because I knew I would be gone in less than 48 hours, but the next time, I will leave. The hotel is in a good location, but needs a lot of sprucing up. This hotel was a cut above a flea bag hotel.
