A little slice of aloha in San Diego

Loved this hotel. I rate hotels on a scale of 1 to Four Seasons, so that's why Catamaran gets 4 stars, not 5. The ambience is very Hawaiian; laid back and peaceful. Romantic, yet family friendly. Not a party hotel. When I booked on Travelocity I mentioned it was our 10 year wedding anniversary and was pleasantly surprised at check-in to discover we had been upgraded to bayfront deluxe. Our patio was about 12 steps from the sand. Room is about due for a renovation, but was not too outdated or cheesy, and the location and view compensated for any lack of bling-factor just fine. Lazy koi ponds meander through the resort adding to the relaxing vibe. Nice heated pool and large whirlpool, located in garden setting, no bay view if you are looking for that. Guests can use chairs and umbrellas out on the beach, next to the bay walk path where people run, skate and bike all day. Great people watching. Restaurants were wonderful, and the service all through the resort was excellent. The staff sent us champagne, chocolate dipped strawberries, and a hand written anniversary card, complete with little heart doodles which was adorable. Walking distance from many places to eat. This is a place that could easily become a home away from home.

All of staff was excellent and so friendly

Pros: The staff, restaurant, bar and pool. We ate breakfast every morning at the hotel outside and it was delicious!!!!!
Cons: Just the cleanliness of the bathrooms?
Location: Loved the beach, bay and all the restaurants nearby
Our daughter lives in San Diego and we have stayed at the Catamaran in the past and loved it. We are not complainers, but I will say that when we checked in room 357 there were numerous black hairs on the bathroom floor and we are all blondes. My daughter wanted to call the front desk and have them come look but i persuaded her not to and cleaned it myself. I realize how busy the resort is, but our room didn't get cleaned until after 4 p.m. on Friday, 4/21 and they did not leave any new soap. I was just about to call the desk to see if we could at least get clean towels so we could shower for dinner. Then that that same night Friday, 4/21 our room phone rang at 3 a.m. (as you can imagine scared us to death thinking it was a family emergency) and it was security stating they had a call about noise control. I told him that we had not complained, but we did have to shut our patio door (which we loved having open all night for the breeze) but were not able to go to sleep because of the blaring music playing next door. Security said they would 'shut it down' which they and we really did appreciate that.

Needs work

Pros: Locations. Grounds. Landscaping. Beach on the bay. Close to oceanfront. For a place to crash at night between going out and about the city it was fine
Location: Great beach on bay - short walk to ocean front beaches. CLose to great restaurants. CLose to shops. Easy access.
Lovely location. Beautiful grounds, landscaping and beach on the bay. Room another story. Size great. Beds okay, but pretty hard. Bathroom tile grout really gross. Furnished rubber mat for bottom of tub horrible idea, plus had a silver fish inside it. Had really weird sound made every so many minutes, like a sonar ping. Do not know what it was associated with, could not track down precise source. One ceiling vent rattled horribly. The metal roofs look really great, and I'm hoping they are changing them all over - because two buildings with wood shake shingles are severely deteriorated, have tarps in areas, and look horrible. If you just want a good location, this is wonderful. For the price though, I expected better rooms. They badly need to invest cash back into their rooms. The guys out front taking care of the cars were the high point of customer service though. Cudos to them.

Motel 6 with a spa

This hotel is in desperate need of updating. I did not get the king room I requested for my stay and could not be accomdated. They said my room was"upgraded" to a studio which meant an old kitchenette with a stove from the 70's. They offered no apology or benefit for not fulfilling my reservation. The tv was very small and no movie options. Our view overlooked the ugly parking lot and the lower level rooms which are in need of roof repair. Our balcony had no screen and we couldn't leave it open because there were already mosquitoes in our room. The restaurant was at least better than my room. Main dish of sea bass was excellent and everything else mediocre. Not to mention a few dead jelly fish floating at the bottom of the pretty tank. I wanted to enjoy the champagne brunch or spa services but i would never pay what they were asking for when all other accommodations were terrible. It was also my birthday and per my husband they "never"sing and still forgot the candle. I was so thankful we only booked one night and I would've driven 2hrs home and counted my losses but it was stormy the night. Will NEVER go back

Vacation in San Diego

Location: The location was perfect for everything that we wanted to do. The Zoo, Sea World and the beach!
The grounds of this hotel are gorgeous. The fish are entertaining and you could sit for hours by an evening fire with a glass of wine and relax. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The air didn't seem to quite keep up and the pillows were not very comfortable but the beach and boardwalk access more than make up for this. Christian, the bartender at the pool, was friendly and always in a good mood. The only staff member that wasn't very pleasant was the young woman who checked us in. Other than that, the staff was great. The men who greeted you when you came or left were always friendly, smiling and seemed to truly enjoy their jobs. We would definitely stay here again!

Pros: see above
Cons: Maybe update rooms.
Location: Proximity to Mission bay and one block to the Ocean Beach boardwalk. Lots of diverse restaurants within walking distance
We had two stays at the Catamaran in one vacation, initially staying for 3 days then returning for one night right before flying out so we could be closer to the airport. The grounds are beautiful, in part, due to the location right on Mission Bay and beautiful landscaping. We loved the restaurant...the service was outstanding, food delicious and we sat out on the patio overlooking the bay for every meal. There's lots of activity at all times of day....runners, walkers, people rollerblading, people out on paddle-boards, sailboats, and wedding activities on the lawn. It all made for a vibrant and interesting environment. At night, they light up heaters, torches, fire pits (gas) and start up the music. Our room during our first stay was so-so, although our bed was really comfortable, most important to us. However, the room itself seemed a little dated, the view was just OK, and I had trouble finding lighting to put on my makeup. Not the case, though with the second room. We were right on the bay, with updated lighting in the bathroom and sitting room right outside the bathroom. Our coffee maker didn't work but no big deal. Also, we put out a room service card on our doorknob before 2am as instructed, but no-one picked it up. So we were forced to go to breakfast out on that wonderful patio space outside the restaurant, which was a pretty awesome back up plan. Overall, we will definitely stay at the Catamaran again in the future. We loved the plac
