"real flavor of island living"
We stayed over a week. Right away we started referring to it as "home" when our day's adventures were ended, because that's what it is--a home you are sharing with others. If you want all the comforts of a posh hotel, then stay there, but if you want to feel what it's really like to live on the big island of Hawaii and meet the locals, then this might be the place for you. Mat and Matt were so helpful and friendly and went out of their way to accommodate our needs. We were grateful for the loan of beach towels and the use of their laundry, since we had packed light. It's a lovely place. Wish we could have stayed longer. Be sure to thoroughly read their website and "getting here" instructions. It's a very well done website, I might add.

"Best place to stay in Hawaii"
We stayed here for the first night of our honeymoon in March 2015. We are so glad we did! We got in just as it was getting dark and briefly saw the waterfall from the patio on our way up to our room. The bed was very comfortable and when we woke up the next morning we took the short trail down to the bottom of the gorgeous waterfall. It was amazing! Really felt like we were in Hawaii! The staff prepared a delicious breakfast and after breakfast we walked the other way down the trail to the bamboo gardens where we saw some other smaller waterfalls. It was an easy walk and so romantic! I would highly recommend staying at least one night here if you are going to Hawaii. It is closer to The Hilo airport but we flew in to the other airport and it was about an hour drive. The staff helped us set up a helicopter tour and we got discounted tickets for staying there. Really loved our stay here!

"Great value for a place to stay in Hilo"
The cottage is a house remodeled into three hotel-like rooms. The resulting rooms are a little dated with some wearing and stains on the carpet, but not bad. The bed was comfortable and the room spacious with a table and chairs to sit at. A small refrigerator is in the room. Free parking. The water in the bathroom was instantly very hot, so you had to be careful. There is only a shower, no tub. The owner makes breakfast about 7:00 am which we enjoyed the two mornings (macadamia pancakes with sausage and scrambelled estate grown eggs with Portuguese sausage. She also grows coffee beans and makes the coffee, which was terrific. Also local fruits are available in the kitchen along with and assortment of cereals, bagels, bread, juice and milk. A full breakfast, indeed! The location is in a quiet residential neighborhood near Hilo Bay with access to the Bay edge at the end of the street. Not so quiet are the coqui frogs that call at night. They didn't bother me, but they kept my wife up some with their calling. The price can't be beat.
