Above and beyond our expectations!
Our stay at Backwoods Retreat was amazing! I will attempt to do it justice. The property is gorgeous! During the day there were deer, birds and all the beauty of the surrounding mountains. At night, the sky was filled with so many stars, it was hard to pick out even the most basic constellation. It is so quiet/peaceful! There is a hiking trail, as well as a pond to fish or just sit by and take in the beauty surrounding you. The house is perfect. The sofa/beds are comfortable. The kitchen is fully stocked with dishes, pots/pans, a crock pot, a single serve blender, a k-cup coffee maker and a drip coffee maker, a microwave and a dishwasher. The televisions have Roku. Service was never disrupted, even during a thunderstorm. The showers are nice sized and everything in the house was clean. The back yard was perfect and secure enough that we could let our dog out without worry. The deck is nice sized with a table and chairs. There was a nice sized grill and a fire pit with a nice supply of wood. The front porch is perfect and secured with a gate. There are several steps up to the front porch, but one could also walk around to the back door if needed (2 steps). The one lane gravel road that leads to the house was easy to navigate. Traffic was nonexistent. Above all, what made this house extra special, were the owners! They were always available but never intrusive. They were the kindest, most accommodating and genuine people I have ever met. This was a dream vacation!

Almost Heaven!
Actually, "almost heaven" might undersell this property! My fiancé and I were in the area to tour the newest national park, the New River Gorge. We found this property to be absolutely IDEAL! It's convenient, charming, incredibly-well equipped (Rokus in main bedroom & living room), and run by two of the nicest people we have ever met! The property is convenient to both the bridge and Grand View sections of the park. After long days of hiking we were able to grab take-out and enjoy it back at the house. However, we were even happier cooking in the full-size and fully equipped kitchen! I reached out prior to our stay to ensure we would be provided firewood during out stay. Not only did they provide the firewood they kept us fully stocked! We were able to use both the outdoor firepit and the indoor fireplace and never went through the wood they prepared for us. And I have to mention just how incredible the actual property is. In-spite of being very convenient to the park and town it feels like you're totally secluded in the mountains! The house has a wonderful view over the front lawn and backs up to a mountain with a hiking trail Mike showed us. And at night the stars stand out like no where else I've been. We really enjoyed watching for shooting stars while enjoying the fenced backyard with our dog. And that is another great point. The back yard is totally fenced and we had no concerns leaving our rough-collie out to enjoy the crisp fall weather. RECOMMENDED!

Perfect Fall Getaway
Very peaceful setting on the side of a mountain with a great view of the well kept property. The layout of the house was especially convenient with split bedrooms and bathrooms and plenty of room. There are lots of windows looking out on the forest. Nice fenced in back yard with a spacious deck. Deanna and Mike were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. We really enjoyed watching the deer. We also enjoyed the private hiking trails up the mountain behind the house. Oak Hill is only a short drive away for groceries or to eat, and Fayetteville is not much farther.

Enjoyable Stay
First time staying in WV. Came up for the week and this cabin was wonderful. The perfect get away from our bustling city life. The host was accommodative and communicative. If you like hiking, the property has a nice 2 mile trail on it with an overlook at the top. Highly recommend staying here.

Deer-Happy Retreat
My husband I stayed for three nights. Each evening (and one early morning) we watched the deer come out of the woods at dusk and graze for a good hour or more. We also saw a few turkeys. The long drive way is definitely long but worth it! The home was exactly as described and was quite cozy. The kitchen had everything we needed and the bed was comfortable. We met Mike and talked to him several times. He was extremely pleasant. He and his wife even told us we could check out late if we wanted because they didn’t have another coming right away. They live right next door but we didn’t notice them at all, except when Mike went to get the dogs. We weren’t far from the National park or the New River Bridge. Shopping and dining were also close by. We had a delightful time and would recommend this rental.

Beautiful & Peaceful
With the forest in view & the pond on the property, we had a nature retreat. The home is set up well for 2 couples, and the 2 bathrooms were a plus. Everything was clean & newer - comfortable beds and couch (often a rarity in rentals) the kitchen modern. There were 2 grills, spotlessly clean, one gas & the other charcoal, and a fire pit in the fenced back yard. Our host Mike was thoughtful and friendly, stocking firewood, and minnows for pond fishing - exceptionally accommodating. We enjoyed our stay & hope to return. Thank you Mike & Deanna.

Appalachia at its best
One home place down from the top of the holler you’ll find Backwoods Retreat. It’s a perfect getaway for anyone with a hankering to tour the New River Gorge National Park. You’re also close to Sandstone Falls, Babcock State Park, Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine. Mike and Deanna, owners of Backwoods Retreat, have done a masterful job of setting up a home for a family or two couples. A bar makes a great place to eat a meal, conveniently prepared in the well-equipped and fully stocked kitchen. There’s a fireplace insert for crisp fall nights. For those who prefer hotdogs and smores prepared over an outdoor fire, there’s an outdoor fire pit. Firewood for either is provided. During our stay, we sat at the oak library table to play board games and cards. Early mornings found us on the covered porch watching deer and turkeys. Trails that crisscross the property can be hiked or you could bring your own ATV or side-by-side. When we were there, a black bear visited the pond down the hill from the house. On warmer days, you may fish. Don’t be surprised if Mike and Deanna’s grandson is on hand to offer tips to insure a catch.

Quiet Cottage
The owners were amazing. Mike and Deeana were gracious and prompt. Now to the fun. If you have boys/girls who love fishing there is a wonderful pond right on the property ( bug spray). Mike was amazing and brought over a few live minnows for my boys. We were lucky enough to have Mike and Deeanas grandson visiting. He welcomed my 2 sons and together they explored the property together catching more minnows and fishing all evening for the holiday weekend. This was our luck, but it speaks to the type of people who are the owners. Not enough good things can be said about them as people. If you have dogs, and love to bring them. This is the place for you. Fenced yard for fires in the evenings. And a large open dog run that is fenced in for saftey. The surrounding hills are beautiful. Very short drive to New River Gorge, and all it has to offer. Far enough away to take in the stars. Isolated enough to be quiet. Close enough to town to run and grab whatever you may need. Thank you for the wonderful stay.
