Like most South Texas settlements in the early 1900s, McAllen started out as a desolate farming community huddled against the Mexican border. But with time came change, and McAllen slowly began to add more industries and grow its economy through oil, wineries, and wood factories. With the construction of McAllen-Hidalgo Reynosa International Bridge came an influx of winter “snowbirds” looking to escape the blizzards up north, boosting the local population during the winter. Transportation From MFE
McAllen-Miller International Airport is only 2 miles from downtown, so you’ll be close to all the sights and entertainment. Whether you book a hotel near MFE or farther afield, the shuttle service that operates out of the airport is by reservation only, so call before heading off to catch your McAllen flight. The shuttles can take you to any of the hotel you choose. On the off chance that you’ve forgotten to pack something, La Plaza Mall is located directly across the street from the airport.
