Basel, a city on the Rhine River where the borders of Switzerland, France, and Germany intersect, is an intriguing destination considered the cultural center of Switzerland. See its modern architecture alongside heritage buildings, such as the 14th century Basel Minster, and peruse the oldest public art collection in the world at the Museum of Fine Arts. Basel vacation packages are great for families too: The city's most-visited attraction is the kid-friendly Zoo Basel, the oldest zoo in Switzerland and a beloved local landmark. EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg (BSL), where Basel flights land, is an unusual airport in that it has both French and Swiss zones. However, navigating through BSL and getting on your way is not difficult.
Exit the baggage claim area at BSL after your flights to Basel land, and you'll see clearly marked exits for the French part and Swiss part of the airport. Choose the Swiss exit and cross the border into Switzerland—by showing your passport or other ID—before you even leave the airport. From here, a drive to Basel takes only five minutes. Five car rental companies serve the Swiss zone; you can find their desks in Hall 4, Level 2 of the terminal building. Visit the airport information desk at the same location for assistance in arranging a taxi through one of several companies serving the Swiss section of BSL. If you got a great deal on cheap hotels in Basel and don't intend to bust your budget getting there, use the direct bus connection from BSL to Bahnhof SBB, the central railway station in Basel. The journey takes about 20 minutes. From Bahnhof SBB you can quickly connect to the downtown exhibition center and other locations in the region.
