Historic but not luxury

Pros: Staff was great as was location
Cons: There was obviously a lot of money spent on updating the bathroom and installing smoke detectors. Should have addressed AC ,windows, carpet.
Location: San Francisco
Visited during hot spell in San Francisco. Room uncomfortably hot despite ceiling fan and additional fan. There was no AC. Wi-fi required installation of a hot spot in order to work, with re-sign on required each time device turned on. Room was musty smelling. We stayed in Historic King with no view.

great expeirince

It was not clear that the free breakfast and the afternoon complimentary wine were in a separate building from the general dining area. It should be made more explicit and perhaps signed in the lobby area. If the Lodge wants to have contributions to a charity, they should make it some form of a match or at least indicate why the Lodge supports it. Overall, the location, restoration, and genereal ambience is excellent. The wine list is extensive, but over priced

A ruined special occasion

We had a confirmed reservation for a ""bayside room,"" but the room overlooked asphalt and some old parking garages. When I asked why we did not have a room overlooking the bay, I was told that the title reflected the room type--i.e., size and layout. Given that the hotel is on the bay, one would expect a ""bayside room"" to overlook the bay. I ordered a glass of cabernet sauvignon by the name of the winery in the bar and was told that the hotel was offering another cabernet instead. When I got the bill, that glass cost $30, more than 2.5 times the one that I initially requested. While check-in was pleasant, check-out was by someone who was defensive when I commented on our experience. Not only will I not go back to this hotel, I will go to Ventana instead of Post Inn, a sister property to this hotel, when I am next in Big Sur.

Markedly impressive

I am not a fan of turning our national parks into amusement parks, however, I am a fan of EVERYTHING historic, eco conscious, activity based, LEED and Green build... as well as a nice spa treatment and a decent meal with a fine bottle of wine. My friend on the parks conservancy got me to stay here back in the friends and family opening, and I am just floored with how well done this place ended up. It is in the most beautiful place in the world... with the view of the golden gate bridge and city it just cannot be beat. I cannot tell you how many times I sat with my wine on that damn rocking chair thinking "there is nowhere in the world like this... nowhere". It is an honour to know that.. while the NPS goes through many many problems, they have honed their attention, skills, knowledge, and awareness of the complexity of the issues at hand and built this stunning retreat. Historic buildings, new build solar powered buildings... this place has everything. We walked out our room with our dog and were hiking within a few minutes. There are some old trails available right on property. Well done Fort Baker, Well done Cavallo Point. This is a high class hotel that can offer something to everyone... and is closer to most of the cool stuff in the city compare to ugly, noisy downtown hotels that are more expensive, and more stodgy. Cavallo wins.
