Unhealthy, dishonest, not as advertised, BEWARE
The minute my family and I checked into this property we were immediately hit with a horrific, overpowering smell of mold. It was so bad you could smell it outside of the front door. We thought it could be an older home and musty but it was unbearable. The home appeared clean and it was decorated very nicely, but when we started to look around we noticed mold in many areas of the house; in the air conditioner vents, the light fixtures, actual mold growing on these surfaces, and even an unbelievable amount of mold spores on a fake plant in the corner of the room that the cleaners missed. We immediately notified the owner within an hour, who said it was "just mildew" and we should open the doors and windows to air the space out. This was not just mildew you find in a bathroom, this was an overabundance of mold from some sort of water damage, which we found evidence of in a few places. He said that he'd send the cleaners back to clean more and check for mold...although cleaners are not mold experts and we knew this was a larger problem. I am allergic to mold and I have an autoimmune disease so I knew right away this would make us sick. We asked him to do the right thing and refund us and we'd stay somewhere else, even though finding a new place with a child, two dogs, 13 hours away from home on a Sunday night would prove to be difficult. He would not agree and said it was "our choice" to leave and we'd have to still pay and he'd do a mold test that he'd charge us for is there was no mold. He never did tell us what his findings were but we left the property, found another place to stay, and got our own mold test done from a professional in the area. The lab results came back and the mold count inside the home was nearly 7 times what a healthy level should be. Proof that we were correct and yet this owner still has not agreed to refund us. Furthermore, we saw damage to the roof that was covered up with a tarp and two cinder blocks, directly over one of the light fixtures that had mold surrounding it and water damage to the breaker box inside the home. The mold remediation expert who came out also found evidence of water damage in several areas. The owner will not acknowledge this. I cannot believe someone would think it's okay to take money from a family when their home was unsafe and could cause major health problems. VRBO is working with us to come to a resolution but this was an awful experience.
