I stayed at Hotel Nacional from August 14–21 and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. I usually try not to bring up race, but I can’t shake the feeling that some of what I experienced was racially motivated.
On my first night, the concierge at the front desk was extremely rude and aggressive. She demanded my papers and documents in a very harsh way, and when I calmly confronted her about her tone, she became even more belligerent. No one offered to help with bags, which was surprising for a hotel advertised as 5 stars.
The hotel itself was also not as advertised. The rooms were just average at best, with noticeable stains on the carpet. Room service is listed as 24 hours, but most of the time no one answered the phone. On top of that, the atmosphere of the hotel felt uncomfortable — almost as if I was being watched constantly. Staff frequently delayed or questioned me and my guest, asking repeatedly for my room number, which made me feel like I didn’t belong there. I also noticed them chatting amongst themselves after interactions, which only added to the uncomfortable feeling.
Overall, this hotel does not live up to a 5-star rating. My trip to Brazil was unfortunately altered because of my stay here. Of course, everyone’s experience may differ, but I wanted to provide an honest account of mine
