Phase 2 construction is underway, and the first closure begins this spring. Closure C (Sheridan Lake Road to Be Still Road) takes effect on Monday, April 28, 2025, and ends Friday, June 13, 2025. During this time period, the closed roadway will not be open to through traffic. Outside of the closure, but within the construction area, travelers can expect pilot cars and wait times, the use of large construction equipment, narrowed driving lanes, and loose gravel surfacing. The road closure will begin again with the same closures August 13-October 25, 2025. Please refer to us-385 . com for more details.
How does this affect guest at the Pinetop Hideaway? You will still be able to visit Hill City, Mount Rushmore, Keystone, Custer and Custer State Park but it will take you a little longer to get there. Instead of traveling south on Hwy 385 to your destination you will travel south on Hwy 385 and turn at Sheridan Lake Road and head back into Rapid City to get on Hwy 16. You may already be familiar with this route as it is one of the routes I will suggest getting to our cabin. There are plenty of tourist attractions along this road to take in. This DOES NOT affect Hwy 385 going north to Pactola Reservoir, Deadwood, Lead, Sturgis or Spearfish Canyon. So, what does this mean for your plans? I suggest that you take a look at the maps and plan your days accordingly. Part of the beauty of the Black Hills are the scenic drives you take!

Mountain top cabin
This place is perfect if you are looking to get away from the city life. Beautiful scenery and I spent mornings sitting on the patio watching the sunrise.
The cabin was fully stocked with everything that you could possibly need. The owners answered all emails promptly and provided you with lots of site seeing options . I would highly recommend staying here.

So peaceful
The house was wonderful. My 9 and 12 year olds were a little afraid to stay in the bottom floor with the pull out couch since it connected to the house via the deck. I would say this house was perfect for the 4 of us. It had no WiFi which was exactly what we needed for the kids to disconnect and be present. The games were really fun, too!

Hilltop pine hideaway
Unique hilltop destination tucked up in the pine trees. Description was very accurate, the location was perfect for the sightseeing we wished to see; pretty centrally located. If you don’t want a location out in the middle of nowhere this may not be the site for you. Gravel road with hairpin turns to access it.. We loved it!

Peaceful retreat with gorgeous morning views
Unique cabin in the woods. Hairpin curves and steep roads were a challenge to get there with a large pickup and trailer, good thing my husband is a trucker. We anticipated a few, but there were several. Bathrooms are small and got a little stuffy but loved the white fluffy towels! Bottom level was a little musty smelling.

Nice unit. If you do have issues with stairs, this is not the unit for you.
Location. Very remote. Quiet. Private.
Well stocked with supplies. I brought items I did not need.
I would stay in this unit again if i was not going to be 60 next year.

Great, Secluded Cabin
Cabin was a nice place to stay, a bit secluded but worked fine for our family of 3. We didn't realize from the directions that it was so far up the mountain so we did spend a fair amount of time in the car during our stay to travel to our other activities. It didn't hamper our vacation, we just had to plan out a little more drive time. Daughter loved the spiral staircase and all the games. We had to do a game night just for her. We never used the bottom floor.

Up in the pines
We had a great stay atop Eidelweiss Mountain. This is probably the cleanest vacation rental I’ve ever stayed at! Immaculate. Brenda is responsive without being intrusive.
This place is set up like a home, very cozy, with everything you need. The kitchen was really well equipped, with high end coffee maker and calphalon pans. Sometimes you stay at a VRBO and they don’t have a cutting board or the right knife - this kitchen has it all. The outdoor gas Weber grill is also wonderful.
On the top deck you’re eye level with the tops of the pine trees, which is what drew me to the property. The layout of the house with the spiral staircase, and having to go outside to get to the bottom level, is a little awkward but manageable for able bodied people. I did wish I had an intercom so I could call people up for dinner. LOL.
My kids loved all the games available, and this led to some family interaction after dinner in the evenings. We all appreciated the space to spread out after a long day of sightseeing - me in the kitchen, tween girl on the phone in the bedroom, teenage boy and his father watching football and playing video games in the basement.
It’s a bit of a drive from any direction. Even once you turn off the main road you have another 10 minutes twisting and turning on mostly gravel. We always rent places away from the fray, so this is fine for us, and especially typical in the beautiful black hills. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend!

Mountain top - central location
This house is very well stocked and the beds are comfortable. We appreciate all the extra touches the owner added to make it fell homey. The decks are lovely and we spent a lot of time outside eating and enjoying the view. Our family of six fit with some adjusting. The spiral staircase was tricky for my 75 year old mom. The basement, as noted in the description, is fully separate so it worked for teenagers but the sofa bed was not great for two full grown teenagers. They did like the gaming system there a lot. Overall, the location is central (takes about 10-15 minutes to get down the mountain to a main road) and we enjoyed The Black Hills immensely.

Paradise in the Pines
This cabin was even better than we were hoping when we booked last year.
The location is perfect for exploring the Black Hills. It is off the beaten path just enough to feel the quiet of the Hills but also convenient enough that we were still able to take in attractions throughout the area. The directions on the site were perfect, and our GPS brought us there without trouble.
The furnishings are comfy, the kitchen is very well equipped, but our favorite aspect was the big balcony nestled in the pine trees. We ate breakfast and dinner out there every day of our stay and packed lunches for our daily excursions. The sun rises directly in front of the cabin making a perfect place for sipping coffee and welcoming the day.
Our boys (7 and 9) loved the landscape and played the games that were included in the cabin.
We did not use the bottom floor (with additional sleeping and bathroom) and the upper two floors were perfect for our family of four.
We are saving this location as a favorite and plan to use it again the next time we are in the Hills.

I would not recommend this lodging.
We were aware of the circular stairway but unaware that one couple’s bathroom was down on another floor and had to walk down flight of stairs OUTSIDE to access it. Coffee maker worked with much difficulty. Fry pan worked once. No dishwasher. Five miles of bumpy gravel road to get to place.

Beautiful view and well stocked kitchen
It was very peaceful and the views amazing. The 2nd bathroom is in the lowest level and you need to go outside and downstairs to get to it. Very challenging for people with mobility issues. Extra lighting would be helpful on the outside stairs. We made it work for our group. We had a relaxing time.
