After all, this is where Karl Benz invented the first vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine in 1886, as well as where Julius Hatry created the world's first rocket plane in 1929. Mannheim also boasts a diverse and welcoming population, an energetic cultural scene, and top-notch shopping that offers visitors plenty of fun. Start with a trip to Barockschloss Mannheim—one of Germany's largest baroque palaces, known for its mustard yellow sandstone. If you're into architecture, you should also check out the Water Tower, which is a great example of Art Nouveau design; the park surrounding the tower is great for relaxing. You should also view the neat modern and contemporary art at Kunsthalle Museum, and perhaps take in a show at the National Theatre at night.
As you walk around town, you're certain to see many doner kebab stalls and pretzel stands; be sure to try these two foods. In general, you'll find a heavy concentration of restaurants and bars in the Quadrat—the center of Mannheim; go enjoy beer at an Irish pub, sweets at a laid-back cafe, or dancing at one of the clubs.
