An Empire at Your Fingertips
The city of Rome is not very widespread, but you want to find the right Rome hotel that's within walking distance of whatever it is you care to see and experience the most—otherwise, those Roman sandals of yours will get well worn.
The cultural center of the world across eons, walking back into the Imperial Age is best experienced near the Roman Forum and the Colosseum, where the city's most iconic images and many other archaeological sites are found. This is by far the most crowded area of the city, and Rome hotels here fill up quickly, so plan in advance.
What to Do When in Rome
Many go to Rome for love, so if a romantic getaway is in your plans, book a stay in the Centro Storico. This historic center offers hotels in Rome amid picturesque winding streets, beautifully landscaped squares, and ancient ruins and monuments such as Theatre of Marcellus and Fontana delle Tartarughe. Pilgrimages to the Vatican City draw many to St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel. While you can't stay in Vatican City itself, if you stay nearby you'll have opportunity to experience luxury Rome hotels as well.
Rome is not just a city of yesterday, and is just as cosmopolitan as Europe's other great cities. Via del Corso is an ancient street, but it's full of exclusive boutiques and trendy cafes. A hotel in Rome near here or the neighboring Spanish Steps places you in the heart of some of the nicest restaurants and bars, as well as classic Rome sights such as Trevi Fountain and Villa Borghese.
