Searching for Venice Hotels
Venice, the city built on water, is a mysterious, dream-like jewel of stone palaces, gondola-plied canals, and lively plazas. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with ancient churches and impressive state buildings, many Venice hotels were once palazzos owned by wealthy traders and merchants in previous centuries.
Because Venice is such a popular destination, vacationers are encouraged to reserve their rooms long before they arrive, especially during peak seasons. Laws against making changes to historic buildings mean that some hotels do not have elevators, so specifically check if that is something you need. Also be aware that many Venice cheap hotels do not have air-conditioning, an amenity that is almost required in the summer months.
Hotels in Venice's Neighborhoods
Many hotels in Venice are located in the central San Marco district, home to the Byzantine masterpiece Saint Mark's Basilica and its impressively active piazza. While close to most sights, be aware that San Marco can be crowded during high season. Dorsoduro, conveniently located southwest of San Marco, is a university neighborhood with plenty of nightlife, wine bars (bàcaros) serving Venetian tapas, and both the Accademia and Guggenheim museums. Cannaregio, near the train station, has the highest concentration of budget hotels, while San Polo, the medieval part of Venice, is close to many fabulous restaurants and charming food markets.
