Staying in the City Center and Beyond
With modern-day skyscrapers towering alongside 1,000-year-old temples giving praise to the moon and earth, Beijing hotels located in Dongcheng, the city’s epicenter, are at the heart of all there is to see and do in this dynamic slice of Asia. The lodgings run from adequate to luxurious, and many cater specifically to Western expectations. The area is central to shopping areas and attractions such as the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, and if you choose to hit one of the local markets, such as Dachilan, put on your best haggling face.
In the Financial District just outside the city center, Beijing cheap hotels are abundant, as are cultural offerings such as the Summer Palace and National Museum. And, for the history or architecture lover, the area teems with centuries-old temples honoring everything from Confucius to heaven, and many have glorious gardens attached. Before heading back to your hotel in Beijing, duck into one of the restaurants or cafes, some of which mimic Western styles and cuisine.
Light Up the Night
The entertainment and nightlife scene, strategically located near many Beijing hotels, is bustling. Discos, pubs, and karaoke bars are easy to find, and most are open all night. In the northeast section of the city especially, nighttime brings lots of foreigners out and about. Many of the best hotels in Beijing are situated around the Olympics complex leftover from the summer games in 2008, and a visit to the infamous Bird’s Nest, Laoshan Velodrome, or Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park should be on your itinerary.
