All About Key West
It's important to begin your Key West vacation with a few facts under your belt. This tiny island has been inhabited since pre-Columbian times and has ties to Cuba, whose fisherman used it as a port. And though just four miles by two miles, Key West packs in tons of surf, sun, and island fun.
Start your adventure at the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum. Although the island has been home to Tennessee Williams, Robert Frost, and more, it is closely identified with Papa Hemingway, who penned several classics while living here. Tour his abode and learn the names of the 60 six-toed cats in residence, descendants of Hemingway's pets.
After your literary thirst is quenched, nosh on local specialties like Cuban sandwiches, jerked Bahamian cuisine, and Southern classics. But leave room for dessert. The island is the birthplace of key lime pie, which is made from a super-tart variety of lime introduced by Bahamian settlers.
After filling up, rent bicycles to avoid the bumper-to-bumper traffic. Don't miss Duval Street, the main thoroughfare through Old Town, but be sure to duck down side streets and talk to the locals, who call themselves Conchs (pronounced conks).
