The house is really attractive and well equipped and provided a perfect location for our holiday. Unfortunately, at the end of our stay, we missed an unexpected email on the final day that gave new details and conditions for leaving. Consequently, we couldn’t fulfil the instructions. We completed all tasks as set out in our rental contract and house rules. As we left, I sent a very complimentary short email of thanks and departed. From that moment our host transformed into a very aggressive individual. He took offence that I hadn’t followed his late and unseen instructions and decided that I was a “liar”, a “coward”, comparing me to a “thief”, a ”pig”, perhaps had “Alzheimer’s.” He said we had left his “beautiful house in a deplorable state”. He threatened me with “a bad time”. This was part of a whole series of hostile and threatening emails through the Vrbo site. At this stage it is worth pointing out there was no damage or breakages to the house and none is claimed. He is demanding a large additional cleaning fee. We offered to pay reasonable compensation subject to his referenced photos. These showed very little but after analysis I offered a much smaller sum. The host eventually admitted that most of the house was “acceptable”. In actuality over 95% was fine.Mostly, he seemed upset by our perceived lack of contrition. He threatened, illegitimately, to cash our security cheque as a punishment, “a lesson in etiquette” for all the past hosts we had intimidated.Beware
