There's a pretty good chance that wherever you live, the trees nearby are home to some species of owl.

However, unless you travel to a few specific locations, it's unlikely these owls live underground in burrows.

One of these places is Cape Coral, home of the largest concentration of burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia floridana) in Florida.

The usual battle of developer vs nature aside, this city has really embraced its ground dwelling winged brethren. They even provide information on how to create a burrowing site on your property.

Another semi-serendipitous wildlife encounter in our criss-cross Florida adventure!

We went to Cape Coral, home of the largest concentration of burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia floridana) in Florida.

In the heat of midday, our search turned up plenty of staked off burrows and wooden perches, but no owls in sight. We decided to head to the coast for a spell and return to owl spotting near dusk.

On our way out of the library parking lot, this down right adorable specimen appeared on a previously unoccupied perch!

We photographed from a distance and he was a very gracious and patient subject, striking all sorts of poses.
