"In the last quarter of the 16th century, the owner of the land grant of Conceição and the first colonist to settle in Nazaré, Fernão Cabral de Ataíde, built (according to Gabriel Soares) the Sugar Mill and Chapel of Saint Benedict at the site where the Chapel of Our Lady of the Conception now stands. The latter chapel dates from the mid-18th century."--HPIP. It's hard to imagine that this was a rural chapel on a plantation since it sits within a neighborhood next to a lovely town square. Of special note is the mosaic bell tower.
