I called and emailed for connecting rooms (as we traveled with children); the manager refused to assist and acted as if he was doing us a favor by staying there. While checking in, there were multiple overheard complaints from other guests about the condition of their room, attitudes of staff, inability to have their family members on the same floor. There was not enough staff to handle the number of guest. 2 bartenders at the pool side bar for 420 full rooms. Some of the staff had attitudes, with some complaining that they are not paid well (or able to eat the food at the hotel), but expected to do the work of multiple people. My husband saw a roach in our room and 3 other rooms reported that they also saw roaches. The housekeeper did the bare minimum (not fully stocking towels or rags or cleaning the mirrors). The balcony slider was stuck and opened only slightly in our room. Another guest reported that their slider fell off and onto their son. Nothing was done to remedy by management... If you need adjoining rooms or travel with a group, you are rolling a dice by booking here. They are not keen on customer service AT ALL!!! Although I will not be returning to this hotel, I have to acknowledge the staff at the kids club. My children thoroughly enjoyed them and the activities (I'm not good with names, but I remember : Hailey and Bronx girl). The day we checked in there was plumbing issues which led to two days without hot water. Inexcusable and not my problem but became my problem and then gave us a $100 credit that can only be used at their gift shop which was closed for a couple of days!!!! Finally during the storm my ceiling in the room was leaking and not to mention puddles of water flooded the floor because the balcony seal was faulty. Staff informed me they could do nothing about this and went into my room without my knowledge to lay down towels. Very disappointing!!! This whole experience was disappointing!!

The hotel was over crowded. Rooms need renovation. Mold is visible in the bathrooms and in the room corners, walls and ceilings. When it was windy and rained heavily, a lot of water came in through the patio doors along with a loud whirling whistling noise because the door seal is worn off and they said there was nothing they could do about it. The air conditioning was inconsistent, did not work properly and lots of humidity and condensation dripping from the ceiling and walls of the room. The dining options need major improvement. Buffet and La Fontana restaurant food was ok, however the Palm grill, the Mexican restaurant and the Asian restaurant food were not good… you can tell the food was left over, pre-prepared, dry, reheated, and very overcooked. The staff at La Fontana were rude as if they were unhappy with their jobs, no smiles, very unwelcoming. The spa was wonderful, I did have a great massage and the staff at the spa were very courteous. Also, the check-in was very slow although they did greet you with a welcome drink and cold cloth. I will say that Sonijka at the front desk was very pleasant, courteous and accommodating. Overall experience was not great and I would not stay here again. I rate this place a 3/10 and I do not recommend it.

Attire was not explained ahead of time for dining areas. No hot water for 4 days. Some staff friendly but others not friendly at all. Got 100 credit to be used on resoet only for 2 days of no hot water but was promised 50 a day. Couldn't use all credit because gift shops were closed most of the time. Spoke to hotel.manager ask3d for 55 credit towards stay was told no. So how was someone to use resort credit when shops were cl8sed even on last day. Also, our flight out was canceled so we asked for one extended night but was denied becase desk clerk said NO open rooms available. However, it was observed another coyole was allowed to check out and check back in due to their flight be canceled as well. Would never return or recommend this resort to anyone. Not very accommodating and friendly at all.

Comfortable room No hot water for 4 days and only received 100$ resort credit for it Due to hurricane, flight cancelled and they were not accommodating or helpful. Otherwise food was average.

There was no hot water for a full day, The majority of the staff was rude, unwelcoming and made it seem they were inconvenienced by guests. Our flight going home was cancelled due to hurricane Erin and there was no offer for extended checkout or attempt to appease the guests that were now forced to wait in the lobby potentially overnight or before going to another hotel. The food (except for the Italian restaurant) was also subpar at best. Put your $ toward another resort.

Avoid This Resort – Disrespect, Stereotyping, and Blame-Shifting Our family of 20+ booked Sonesta Maho Beach Resort for my sister’s 40th birthday. We brought elderly parents, kids, and couples, expecting a fun celebration. Instead, we got public disrespect from staff, offensive comments from a manager, broken A/C for days, and a follow-up response that blamed us. The biggest incident happened when a staff member near the pool bathrooms insulted my brother-in-law, telling him “he’s not his slave to clean after him” — in front of his wife and 9-year-old. When we calmly brought this to Angela Monroy (a manager), she told us they “could kick us all out,” accused me of drinking (I hadn’t), and said to my brother-in-law “us Latinos are hot-blooded.” To my white partner, her tone was completely different, but she still made a bizarre remark about “drunks and drugs.” Instead of apologizing and taking responsibility, management later sent us a message doubling down — claiming my brother-in-law was aggressive and threatening, based on their own staff’s accounts and footage we were never allowed to see. We were never contacted directly by upper management, even after requesting it. Other problems: A/C didn’t work for three nights in multiple rooms. Food was consistently below average. Many staff acted irritated or unapproachable. We left feeling disrespected, unheard, and misrepresented. If you value being treated professionally and respectfully, choose another resort. Th

Our stay at the Sonesta was very good. The property and the beach were nice. The staff were very friendly and were pleasant for the most part. There was plenty to eat and drink. I thought the food was tasty especially at the Italian restaurant. The one downfall (and it’s not really the hotel’s fault) is the crowd at the pool. People were very intoxicated late in the afternoon. They could get a little rowdy and inappropriate ( if you have children it may be too much for them to see). Overall the hotel was nice and I would recommend it.

This was the most horrendous hotel my family has ever stayed at. Rude and nasty staff. Disgusting food and drinks. Room smelled like mildew. Flood after every shower. Stay away!
