The small village of Arès is situated to the north of the Arcachon Basin, between Andernos and Lège Cap Ferret. This small oyster-farming village with its white and blue huts is typical of the basin. It marks the start of the Prés Salés, a marshy area at the bottom of the basin where it is lovely to stroll, hike or observe the local flora and fauna. Following the coastline path along the basin, you will reach Andernos via the Quinconces nature reserve. Next to Arès, you will find Andernos-les-Bains. Andernos-les-Bains is a town with over 12,000 inhabitants, featuring 1 cinema, a public indoor swimming pool, 1 skate park, 1 City Stadium, several children’s play areas, a padel court and a laser tag centre. You can stroll along the pedestrianised street to do some shopping, enjoy an ice cream or a crêpe, take a walk along the pier (the longest in France, offering a unique view of the Bassin, the stilted huts, the Île aux Oiseaux, and more) or sample oysters at one of the many tasting spots in the harbour. Not to mention the Domaine de Certes (Audenge), the Teich bird sanctuary, Aqualand (Gujan Mestas), the Parc de la Coccinelle and Kid Parc (Gujan Mestas). Just an hour’s drive south, you simply cannot visit the Bay without seeing Arcachon and the ‘Winter Town’, then climbing the Dune du Pilat. Just 30 minutes to the north, you can explore the Cap Ferret peninsula, its 10 villages, its oyster ports, the Cap Ferret lighthouse, the panoramic view from the tip of Cap Ferret, the ice creams at Frédhélian, the Bélisaire jetty, the little train… The extensive network of cycle paths in the Gironde will allow you to cycle around the basin, reach the Atlantic beaches, Cap Ferret or even Arcachon for the more ambitious. UBA ferry services run between Andernos and Arcachon and between Cap Ferret and Arcachon. The Passe Marée also allows you to reach Arcachon by sea, even at low tide, but it also offers trips around the basin, departing from Andernos. On the basin side, you’ll find a multitude of small beaches between Arès and Andernos, but you’ll have to wait for high tide to swim there, except at Lac de Saint Brice (Arès), a small reservoir in the basin, which
Around the Bay, you’ll find a host of small beaches between Arès and Andernos, but you’ll need to wait for high tide to go for a swim – except at Lac de Saint Brice (Arès), a small reservoir in the bay where you can swim whatever the tide. If you’re travelling with children, you’ll love Betey Beach (Andernos), where you can enjoy a children’s play area right on the beach, treat yourselves to ice creams and crêpes at the little beach snack bar, have a picnic in the shade of the pine trees, and go for a swim at high tide. On the Atlantic coast, Grand Crohot beach is the closest ocean beach to Andernos (about a 15-minute drive), but you’ll find a multitude of beaches—some busier, some quieter, some more accessible, some less so—along the miles of coastline the Atlantic Ocean has to offer. In summer, Cap 33 offers a wide range of free sporting activities open to everyone (see the programme online).
