Gelati is a monastery founded by King David the Builder in 1106. It's easy to see how he got his name, as this UNESCO site is still intact and well preserved 900 years later. 
King David is buried here as well, and you can see his tombstone under one of the arches. Reportedly he wanted the monastic students to walk over his grave on their way to study every day to remind them of...who knows what?
You aren't allowed to walk over the tombstone anymore, which is probably a good thing!

Gelati Academy, 11 km North-East of Kutaisi was founded by King Davit in 1106. The St. Mary's church displays frescos from different centuries. The golden mosaic in the apsis dome is one of the oldest fragments. The Academy is a UNESCO world heritage site since 1994 and renovation is still ongoing.
