Former Japanese Airfield captured by US Marines in July 1944. Seabee's worked 24hrs a day for 45 days to expand and repair the airfield for use by American heavy bombers. On August 6, 1945 a B-29 named Enola Gay departed Tinian and dropped the first atomic bomb (Little Boy) on Hiroshima. On August 9, 1945 a B-29 named Bokscar departed from North Field and dropped an atomic bomb (Fat Man) on Nagasaki.

Built by the Imperial Japan Army and captured in 1944 by U.S Marines. This  valuable airstrip was used to launch attacks on mainland Japan to end the World War II. The atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were staged from this runway. The area is now a US National Park..
