Nice, relaxed feel - on the beach

Pros: The in-room kitchen, the pools and water slide, the outstanding staff, the rain shower, proximity to the beach, clean and modern facility.
Cons: Offer rooms with two double or queen beds
Location: Excellent location. It is right on the beach and the beach walk is very convenient and beautiful. Convenient free shuttle. Parking easy to find.
We loved our stay at the Westin Ocean Resort Villas. We were trying to decide between the two Westins and the Sheraton for our Kaanapali stay. I'm glad we chose the Westin villas. All three had amazing pools (which was what my daughter wanted) but after visiting all three resorts, the Villas had a more relaxed, spacious feel to it and we loved having a kitchen to make our own meals. Almost nightly, we used the BBQ's that are all over the resort to make dinner. There were several families doing the same thing which made for a friendly environment. The staff was very friendly and helpful at every encounter. I would definitely give them 5 stars for service. The bed was very comfortable, which is very important to me as am pretty picky about that. I just wish they had a room option with two beds instead of just one king. My daughter had to sleep on the couch. As typical, the pull out couch bed mattress was uncomfortable, but my daughter chose to sleep on the couch intact and found that surprisingly comfortable. I was also pleased with the provided dishes and cookware in each room. Everything seemed new and very clean. The dishwasher worked very well, as did the washer and dryer in the room.

Great Snorkling!

This was a nice property. The snorkling in front of the property is great. We were "upgraded" to a partial ocean view. I would have been offended if I had paid for the view. We also got an ADA room....even though if you were handicapped, you would have a heck of a trip from the elevator to the room because there were no other ramps! But it was close to the parking lot, and we were in and out a lot so it worked for us. I understand the drinking laws in HI, but I think the hotel is taking serious advantage of it with expensive and lousy drinks. If they are expensive...fine, at least have them taste good. No margarita should taste like nothing but sweet and sour or processed coconut milk. (My reveiw is of the sports bar on by the pool...the italian restaurant had great drinks and didn't drink at other property). All in all, it's a nice place but skip the outside sports bar...or buy one drink and then keep reusing the cup with the your own drink!

Nice hotel and amenities.

Pros: Free Internet
Cons: Noisy
It was Christmas week so maybe that was the problem but children were overrunning the place. One of the pools should be set aside for adults.

They forgot to clean our room!

Pros: Free Internet
Cons: they didn't clean our room.
The staff was supposed to clean our room and they came in while we were out. They replaced the towels and made the bed. I contacted the front desk and they apologize and said they will send someone up to clean our room. It never happened!

Overall very satified with this Hotel

Pros: Free Internet, very good snorkeling right at the resort
Cons: not a lot of good restaurantsat lease none that w
I booked the room stating that there would be 3 adults and 1 child, ages 20 and 17 assuming that they would get a bed. Very disappointed that there was a King sized bed that was comfortable, and a sofa bed that was very very noisy and uncomfortable! our 17 year old woke up with a backache every morning. really wish there would have been 2 queen sized beds. And everything would have been purfect. Oh except the mold in the shower. Overall very nice place to spend your vacation.

The condo and resort met my expectations.

Pros: Free Internet
The condo was as expected. Bed was very good. View was pretty good. Location of this particular unit very close to general store, lobby, and services. Beach front had great snorkeling. However, go to Snorkel Bobs to get equipment - prices at resort were stupidly high. There is one less than 1.5 miles away. Do head to Walmart, Kmart, or grocery store near the airport before you head to the west side of the island. The grocery prices on the west side are toooo high, but you hesitate to drive the 30 to 45 minutes back to pick up supplies.

I would not come back. The hotel was understaffed.

Pros: Close restaurants
Cons: understaffed
I would not come back. The details are below, but the summary is the hotel has potential but the lack of service is a turn-off for me. This was even more surprising since they want to "impress" you enough that you'll sign-up for a timeshare. I encourage you to Google that before making any decisions and you'll find the level of service is supposedly worse for owners. Not to mention alleged "enormous maintenance fee increases". Either some of the reviews on here are owners talking it up to help with renting out their weeks and selling their timeshares or we were here on a VERY BAD week for the staff. Both of which are equally likely. My personal concierge, Caroline, did an amazing job working with my wife to recommend and setup the activities I mention below. Caroline also provided a good list of restaurants and was responsive leading up to the trip and while we were here. I think this place could be great for families as long as you have the right expectations. Expect a great facility where everything for the pool/beach cost extra except the water and towel. Also, expect to have high-quality service WHEN you can get it, but not very often due to being understaffed. If you come, visit Goofy Foot Surf School (ask for Keith), make the trek to the best sunrise on the planet with Haleakala Bike Company and (definitely) save a day for "The Road to Hana". Leave early and you MUST do the "backside". It is a very easy drive despite what others may say. I think this is just to keep people from crowding the locals there. Recommendations for Hotel: More staff. Deliver on expectations of a nice resort or set new ones. The "bones" (facilities, locations, etc.) are all good and those you can't control. The ones you can control (service) are easy to fix. Weather/View - NA: We had one clear day and it was gorgeous. Our other 5 days were apparently during "Maui Winter" (March). According to the locals, we visited during their entire winter season, which is only 5 days. Chalk that up to bad luck. Service - 1 star: This is where I was sorely disappointed. I think the best way to describe my problems is "under staffed". The best example of this is when my phone rang the front desk for over 10 min straight before someone answered to confirm checkout time the day before my departure. The valet stand was always overwhelmed, though they worked hard. The main hotel concierge didn't answer a couple times I called and I had to leave a voice mail. I only used them the days Caroline had off. The housekeeping service is not daily. (Once every 7 days for owners, once over 5 for me). The pool area for getting towels and toys closes at 5 (sunset isn't until 6:30p and this faces the sunset). The pool waitresses work hard, but there are too few of them. My wife sat by the pool for an hour before a waitress ever made it in our vicinity. She ordered a drink that arrived about 45 min later. Yes, there is a pool bar nearby that we could have used. It would be more effective to not have waitresses and let everyone know just to go to the bar. Public Facilities - 4 stars: The facilities are in great shape for the most part where we were spending our time. The BBQ gas grills were a nice touch. The place seemed crowded, but as a party of two we could generally find a place to sit. Rooms - 4 stars: If you put intermittent, at best, housekeeping service under "service", the room itself was great. We did not have a good view (very few in the Westin North have good views), call ahead to get a better view if you can. I am SPG Platinum so I got a large room that was nice, but I could only look at a Koi Pond. Could not see the ocean at all. Beds were nice, decent channel selection (got to experience it since weather was bad). Lost one star for no view and internet that was shoddy at best. Beach - 4 stars: The beach looked great on our "good day". Easy ocean access. My only complaint here is the lack of accommodation on the beach. Seemed like the hotel only focused on the pool area. It appeared the chairs were extra at the beach. I'd recommend they take a page out of the Miami South Beach hotel playbook (W South Beach) or Punta Mita St. Regis and see how they handle their beach area. Again, this is a service problem. Restaurants - 2 stars: Overpriced and not good. Save your money and (1) buy some groceries near the hotel (2 easy options - Safeway before hotel and cheaper Times Supermarket after, they have wine, beer and liquor at both). Plan your meals and get off of the resort to Whaler Village, Lahaina and the like. We ate at Star Noodle, Hula Grill, and others while we were here. Location - 5 stars: This is the right place on the beach to be for enjoying the ocean. It is a decent drive to Haleakala and The Road to Hana, but not bad. Easy to get into Lahaina and Whaler's Village for a meal. Plus, its Hawaii. Spa - NA: Didn't get a chance to go.

Perfect resort to stay in Maui!

Pros: very family friendly
A great place for the family. On our 7 day visit, we had ground floor rooms immediately in front of the Pirate’s Pool and the children’s playground, and while it was no ocean view, it was absolutely perfect for our group including 4 children, ages 1 to 7. Even with the patio door open, the giggles and shouts from outside were never an intrusion. And with the door closed and the curtains drawn, Grandma could sleep until noon. With a full kitchen in the suite and gas barbecue grilles located throughout the property, you could eat all of your meals at “home”, keeping control of your diet and reducing the daily costs. The closest supermarket is a within walking distance and only 2 stoplights up the road, and if you run out of diapers or pork chops past midnight, they’re still open. Whether you are in a studio or a suite, the bathrooms are huge, and the whirlpool tub has a clever profile that makes it perfect for bathing the baby in a few inches of water. For the bigger kids, the several pools offer something for everyone, and the property is so large that the guests can spread out and find their own space. The beach is incredible, wide and uncrowded. Warm sand, but not too hot to walk on, and a good coral reef just offshore make it fun whether you want to get wet or stay dry. We’ve stayed at the main Kaanapali resorts several times before, and it’s so much nicer to be on the north side of Black Rock and away from the mobs…especially when you have your own kitchen. With the Westin, you have many choices for how to spend your vacation. You can stay on site and chill, or drive a few minutes and find a great little lunch spot. It worked for us, and we’ll be back as soon as we can.
