Guest reviews for Holiday Inn Express Edinburgh Royal Mile

Location was okay, not far from the Royal Mile, but very close to the club district, did not feel very safe walking at night. Room was tiny, nowhere to unload our belongings. Staff checking us in was not very helpful and our key cards kept having to be reset. Breakfast was mediocre at best. Staff when we were leaving was very friendly.

Front desk staff = 5 star

Pros: The staff was the best thing about the hotel. The gentleman at the front desk went out of his way to help tired travelers.
Location: Near most tourist attractions. We went on a ghost tour that started off of the same street the hotel is on.
This is a Holiday Inn Express, not a Ritz. With that said, it is a wonderful hotel, much better than some of the more expensive hotels. It is located in central Edinburgh, near pretty much everything. We used this hotel as our stop between destinations, but we could have stayed longer. We were there for one brief night, rolled in late, needed an extra room and had to be out super early. The gentleman working at the front desk treated us with respect and was incredibly helpful. He gave us a good deal on the second room, set up a taxi service for the next morning and had the breakfast room ready for us an hour and a half earlier than the scheduled time. The hotel also held our luggage the night before we checked in because we were on a tour and couldn't bring our large suitcases with us. The rooms were your standard hotel rooms, wifi worked well, continental breakfast was fresh and had an assortment of everything including a sweet coffee machine with a variety of coffees. It was a short, but very positive stay.

A nifty modern hotel nearby the Royal Mile

Pros: Excellent staff
Cons: It's about right as is
Location: Proximity to Royal Mile a big plus
Just about right for American tourists used to breakfast included, non-squeaky floors, real elevators and the things you don't always see in European hotels.

The staff were very helpful! I would stay there again!

Pros: Free breakfast, Close restaurants, Free Internet, Quiet, friendly staff, clean, close to the famous sites
We liked how close the hotel was to the Royal Mile, just a short walk away to all the famous sites and shopping! The staff were great! Had helpful suggestions for places to eat, arranged for the taxi pickup when we needed a taxi, & were very helpful with directions. Internet was free but we needed a passcode from the front desk. Great breakfast each morning before we set out for sightseeing or shopping!

Great Location but disappointed with room for 3 adults

First, the bad news.. My two adult daughters and I stayed in Edinburgh for 3 nights in a room with a double bed and "sofa bed". I was expecting a sofa bed similar to what we have in the US, which is a couch that pulls out to create a full mattress on a metal frame. The sofa bed in the hotel was more of a futon type pull-out made up of several pieces hooked together. (I had this type of convertible bed in a hospital when I had to spend the night after my son had surgery.) The joints/gaps in the pieces were not comfortable. The pulled out "bed" was only about 12 inches off the floor. It was not at all what I expected to find for 3 adults. If I had known it wasn't a true sofa bed I wouldn't have booked the room. The room was made up with the sofa pulled out all of the time so that there was absolutely no room for two people to walk in the room, let alone the three we had. Also, they advertise a computer available for guest use, but fail to mention that it costs 3 British pounds for every 15 minutes. The computer was slow, which compounded the frustration over the fee. We had just come from Dublin where the hotel did not charge for this service. The good news is that the staff was very nice and helpful. The location is great and we were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go. We walked at night also and always felt safe. I would stay here again if I had only two people in the room, but I wouldn't stay in these rooms with more than two adults.

Great location near the Royal Mile, Train and Coach (Bus) station

Pros: Free breakfast, Close restaurants, Free Internet, great location, helpful staff
Probably the best features of this hotel are the location - a block or so from the Royal Mile and a short distance from South Bridge Street near the center of the city. Both the train station and the bus station are within walking distance so economical transportation is close by. Holyrood Palace and new Scottish Parliament is a short walk down the Royal Mile. Edinburgh Castle is a longer walk up the Royal Mile. Many Edinburgh landmarks (St. Giles, John Knox house, etc.) are in between. Scott Monument on Prince's street as well as Highland bus tour departures and art museum are easily walkable as well. No need for a car for touring the countryside and nearby cities of Stirling, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness are accessible by train. We highly recommend the train for a visit to Linlithgow, west of Edinburgh. Breakfast at the hotel is typical of Holiday Inn Express, reasonable selection and good value. Highly enjoyed by all and usually a packed dining area. Rooms are modern, bathrooms are reasonably spacious, sleeping area a bit crowded but comfortable for tired tourists. Grocery and convenience shopping is accessible on Bridge Street. Helpful for packing a lunch on busy touring days.

Best value in the city

I have stayed in a few different places in the city, and this was a delightful find. I would recommend anyone consider it as a great option. Easy to reach points of interest, and absolutely a good value. Changed my view on Holiday Inn for the rest of time!

Highly Recommend!

I cannot tell you how lovely our stay was at the Holiday Inn Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Scotland. Positioned just off the Royal Mile, with an alley connecting the hotel to the heart of the Royal Mile itself, this hotel truely fits budgets and expectations alike. Neatly presented rooms that are spacious (as far as European standards are concerned) and clean, friendly staff that goes out of their way to make you feel welcome and ensures that every need is met to the fullest. We also enjoyed the complimentary breakfast, which was well stocked and nicely presented and neat at all times. Location is perfect as it just a shirt walk to Edinburgh Castle and accessible to the Grassmarket area as well. When we visit Edinburgh again, this is where we will stay and I highly recommend you consider it as well.
