Hotel shut with no prior notice

When we arrived at the hotel it had closed down four weeks previously. A notice on the door informed us to which hotel we had been transferred. This was difficult to access as the hotel next to The Chevalier( our new destination) was still under construction. There was no drop off point for luggage and my husband had to carry all bags from a car park about 7 minutes walk away. We were greeted by black billowing smoke. I have asthma and so even entering the hotel was worrying. The staff informed us we should have received an email from Hotels.com informing us of the situation. We never received one. The only one we received, 4 days before our stay was wishing us a pleasant holiday. Remember the hotel by this point had been closed for 4 weeks. The hotel staff at The Chevalier were most courteous and did their best to help. We found the whole experience most stressful.

Bad service and poor condition

Beautiful building that is not well maintained - problems pop up everywhere - from the toaster at the breakfast room to the bathtub in your bathroom. The room we got was really spacious and we liked it. Despite than that - the whole service was a disaster - the receptionist was not there when we arrived (she turned up 10 minutes later and the reception was left without a person), she gave us the key and then "what a surprise" - we found out that the room was already occupied. The other guests, of course, complained as well, as somebody else was opening their room. After this "misunderstanding" we got the second room, which was nice. The thing that really annoyed me the most is that nobody informed us that the Reception is closed at night and we have to call a telephone in order to get in. We ended up waiting for more than 15 minutes in the dark with 2 young children, knocking at the door. I had to go to the bar next door and ask how do we enter the hotel, because the only information we had was a note on the door that we have to call a number, which was operated in only in French!!! I can write more, but I will stop here, saying that I will never return or recommend the hotel.

THIS HOTEL IS CLOSED - DO NOT BOOK!

This hotel is CLOSED. Do NOT BOOK. We arrived on Fri. night at 10pm and I chose this hotel because it was so close to the Carcassonne Train Station. We couldn't find the entrance to the hotel and then asked the restaurant nearby who informed us that the hotel has been closed. It was quite frustrating because it was so late. There is a sign on the hotel that informs you if you had a reservation, that now you have to go to a different hotel - Les Chevaliers. We walked 15 min. to this hotel and they had our booking. But the whole experience was frustrating because one shouldn't be able to book a hotel online that isn't still in business.

Hotel has closed down !

Arrived at the hotel to be told it was closed for good and we had to walk 15mins to another hotel for our stay. We were not informed of the change beforehand and the other hotel, although in a better location with a great view, was still undergoing building work .

Avoid Avoid Avoid

Really? Not a four star hotel as most travellers would imagine. Yes, lots of history and whilst the telephone exchange and marbled staircases are the types of features you might enjoy, when fused with tacky furniture and throw away artwork and terrible shabby decoration everywhere else does make for a disappointing standard. So instead, we up and left as could not accept this for four days. We stayed at the Best Western Don Jon in the medieval city, which proved to be comfortable and full of southern French character. At Le Terminus the breakfast was stone cold in a cramped youth hostel like dining area.. Nothing wrong with youth hostels when you are paying youth hostel prices... Avoid unless you.are in need of a last minute one night stop.. bit not for a couples/family break to this wonderful region of France.

Good location, historic but tired

This hotel attracts because of its Art Deco style and history, but it’s tired and needs some energy. Our superior room was specious and bright; but the windows to the balcony didn’t close properly despite some attention from the staff. This would be a bigger issue later in the year because of heat and mosquitoes. At the moment, there are roadworks outside which can’t be helped and so the bar isn’t stocked or staffed which makes it quite dull in the lounge. Swimming pool was a nice surprise; clean and fresh and worth a visit after a long day in the city. Breakfast was good. Unfortunately there were also some very noisy guests on one night and no intervention from night staff which was a shame.

Charming hotel, excellent breakfast and facilities

Really pleased to have chosen this hotel. As a single traveller, my room was a good-sized twin, clean and comfortable. Lovely staff, friendly and helpful. Breakfast buffet was excellent with lots of choice, hot and cold. Wonderful swimming pool on the basement level, free for guests to use. Hotel central to everything. Just across the road from the station and canal boats. Local shops and restaurants nearby. Medieval city about 15 minutes walk, easy to make your way there. Really enjoyed my short break in Carcassonne and would stay at this hotel again. The walled medieval city is marvellous - it goes without saying - the ramparts, the castle, and the narrow streets with pretty little shops and restaurants. The Basilique de Saints Nazaire et Celse is magnificent with some of the most breathtaking gothic stained-glass windows I've ever seen. Don't forget to check out the attractions in the town of Carcassonne itself (known as 'la ville basse' or 'la Bastide de Saint Louis'), e.g. Eglise de Saint Vincent and the Chapelle des Carmes, which are literally just up the road from the hotel. The town art gallery is also worth a visit. Very pleasant square (Place Carnot) a few streets away, where there are lovely cafes and restaurants. There's a wonderful produce market there on Saturday mornings that is well worth wandering through.

Faded glory

Right near the railway station, however, a walk to the castle which is doable. This grand old hotel, built about 1919, was once a show piece and has seen much better days. To call it a four star is overstating it. The original furniture is stained and badly marked, the lighting is poor and the bathroom shower curtain is grimy. The positive thing is the room is spacious and the view of the castle on the hill is good. Needs to spend some money on reno’s in the lounge and rooms to bring it up to its former glory, as it has character.

Very good location close to the railway station, shops and restaurants. Staff most helpful and friendly. Hotel is not 4* by any stretch of the imagination. Badly needs a makeover. Could be turned into something great as the building has alot of character.

Promising start

Check in was great. My room ready early and helpful check in staff. Noisy neighbours meant next to no sleep and although there was a pool it was small and dirty. No replenishment of tea and coffee which seemed stingy. Checkout was sullen and no receipt given. But hotel is in a great position near the station and has that art deco lobby. Better luck with noise from guests and it could have been a different story.

Appauling service from a four star hotel !

Receptionist non existent most of the time . She doubled between reception and serving in the breakfast room . We required a taxi to take us to the airport , receptionist made one attempt to book it when that failed she told us to go out to the street and find one ourselves . Impossible to book dinner in the dining room .

Good location central to transport links

Hotel is very close to the main station and bus links to the airport. Overlooks the Canal du Midi, where boat trips run and cycles may be hired. Clearly a very smart hotel in its day, but now enjoys what I would describe as "faded grandeur" Magnificent lobby area with a stunning marble staircase. Breakfast buffet room off the lobby was sometimes crowded and the limited selection (in my experience of continental hotels) needed to be replenished more often. We had a superior room on the second floor. I believe the majority of rooms fit this classification, but it was quite large and on the corner of the hotel, thus boasting a large balcony overlooking the square and the canal and lock. Two comfy chairs which is a nice change - all hoteliers please take note! - meant we could sit together and enjoy the view. The en-suite bathroom was also large although the shower head had to be held as the bracket on the riser was broken. Overall good value for money.

Great location, good value.

The hotel was in a great location. With bags in tow, it was an easy walk from the train station. Restaurants and tourist sites were easily accessible as well. We were there on Bastille Day and were able to get a great view of the fireworks from the window in the hallway. The breakfast was wonderful. Those at the desk were very helpful. The charm of the lobby seemed to stop at our room. However the room was clean, comfortable, and fit our needs well. It was a good value.

Pros and cons at a reasonable price.

Upon arrival the first look was a huge disappointment. The four stars on the wall seemed far different from the very tired train station hotel we encountered. It looked and smelled of a very old hotel. Nonetheless our room was spacious and the bathroom was very nice. The bed was adequate. The coffee service was very good. The air conditioning was marginal. With an early train the next morning the location was perfect. Overall: not really what we expected; in the end better than it first seemed; and satisfactory when the only real purpose was a place to sleep. It is close to the center city. It's quite a walk to the ancient area but the little white train can be boarded just out front. Across the street is a brassiere with very reasonable prices and good food and drink. Across the street in the other direction is the canal barge ride which is relaxing cruise for 75 minutes at 8 Euros per person. I'd give the hotel a 3.2 out of 5; the Mrs. evaluates its lower but appreciated the proximity to the gare at 6 am. Price of the room was quite reasonable.
