Orange County, California, is a vacationer’s dreamland with its theme parks, vast number of beaches, and incredible shopping. You can drive scenic Highway 1 the length of the coast in your car rental from Orange County or ride the train along the same route. Soak up all the sun you can with a trip to one of the state’s premier destinations.
From SNA to the Beach
Once your flight to Orange County lands at John Wayne Airport (SNA), get yourself an Orange County car rental from the Arrivals Level between Terminals A and B, then let your outing begin. Head 11 miles west to the sands of Huntington Beach to experience true Southern California culture. Go to one of the local surf shops to sign up for a surfing lesson or just grab a boogie board. When wave riding exhausts you, drive 11 miles south for some great shopping at Fashion Island’s designer stores in Newport Beach. After a long day in the water and loading up on accessories, walk out to the end of Newport Pier for dinner while the sun dips below the western horizon.
To get a peek inside Spanish-era California, make the 24-mile drive south to San Juan Capistrano and walk the ruins of the old mission. One can’t help but be impressed by the architecture of the Great Stone Church that was dubbed the “American Acropolis” because of the resemblance to its Greco-Roman relatives. Other attractions within the grounds are the Sacred Garden with its four-bell campanario, the Golden Altar, and the Catalan forges.
