These bridges were first built when existing low water bridges were covered by water. The great advantage of the swinging bridge design was that it could span a very wide river without needing foundation pillars in the middle. This meant that there was no obstruction to river traffic during construction and no danger of the pier being damaged during floods. They were also cheaper to build than pier designs.
The upright piers were constructed first before being pulled into position by mules. The cable was then dragged across by hand using a wheel or pulley. The Swinging Bridges were built during The Great Depression and took only 3 months to complete. Of all the many swinging bridges built in the area during that era, the two Swinging Bridges crossing the Grand Glaize Creek at Brumley, are the only swinging bridges left standing. Although the smaller bridge has undergone some reconstruction, they are both still usable by the public.
The Swinging Bridges span a small river in an area of stunning natural beauty and many visitors enjoy fishing and camping during the summer months. The water temperatures are usually warm as the river is very shallow, so it is ideal for day trips of picnicking on the shore followed by a gentle swim.
At one point the largest man made lake in the United States, the Lake of the Ozarks is an impressive sight. Situated in the middle of the Ozark range in Missouri, there are plenty of beautiful views and great hikes to explore!
