While the silver and gold mined there lasted it was incredibly wealthy, as can be seen by the quality of the buildings. This made it a target for the invading Ottoman Empire, resulting in the building of two significant castles. In 1782 it was the third largest town in the Kingdom of Hungary, but when the mines ran dry, the town stopped still.
