BEWARE!

Checkin was terrible! Despite having prepaid 2 nights and had stayed there on 2 previous occasions I was asked for photo ID. AS I wasnt driving and naturally didnt have my passport as I am a Kiwi travelling in NZ That wasnt possible. Despite arguing my case they were not going to allow me to stay. I have NEVER been asked this in the past at any NZ accomodation and certainly never been refused a stay. After much searching I luckily found a photo on my phone from 2 years ago of my passport which they finally accepted as ID. Interestingly 2 days later I was staying at an hotel in Wellington for a night and was NOT required to produce photo ID This is unacceptable and I will NEVER stay at Ascotia again

Amazing staff member who checked us in - parking was awfully tight to get in and out of and limited Would have been nice to have teabags for morning cuppa - green tea is an odd acquired choice - was a nice quiet hotel - lovely place to stay though

Never would I have expected a hotel to not have air conditioning! Although there was an A/C wall unit, it did not work. We had to open the windows and use a fan to try to survive the warm night. It was still uncomfortably hot, and with the open windows we heard loud street noise all night. It was awful! We heard some other guests complain that they did not even have a fan. Separately, we did not have soap or shampoo in our shower. I brought this to the attention of the front desk three times over eight hours until I finally asked them to hand the soap to me so I could put it in the room. Even though we had made a non-refundable payment covering two nights, we left after one night and moved to another hotel. Although the nightly rate for this hotel is lower than other hotels nearby, it was not worth it to us.

Great hotel in a quiet area. Room was a good size and was very clean. Staff was very nice. And its only 10-15 minutes walk from restaurants and bars

On arrival told air con was not workig in the building in NZ hottest tie of year. We were offered a fan, which died very early in the evening. Also found that our Queen room was actually a twin (which we took becuase it was so hot and uncomfortable in the room) Toilet cistern would not full and I had to adjust to get it fixed The drain in the shower only worked slowly so it overflowed. Door on the shower had a broken hinge and left a hole that water went onto the toilet. I had been there before and it was fine, but there has obviously been no maintenance or improvements over the last half dozen years - avoid this hotel now

Dirty floor - there was a chocolate wrapper when I entered my room. Looks like it was not vacumed. Breakfast - they admitted me to their breakfast at 9:30am but was told to hurry up because they will be closing in 20min. Fire alarm - false fire alarm at the first day of my stay. It was such a hussle. Aircon - aircon unit does not work so I need to turn on the fan. Toilet - the shampoo and body wash was not refilled.

Pleasantly surprised

I was concerned about the negative reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised. Excellent and efficient check-in/check-out. Welcoming staff. Very quiet night. Easy to reach, not on a busy street (dead end). The room and bathroom are small but functional. If you are picky, you would find a few things that would benefit minor repair or painting but rally nothing major.
