You could certainly tell this is, in part, an employee owned establishment. Very prompt, conscientious and friendly service. The hotel design and decor is, itself, wonderfully entertaining if you like history and the eclectic. If you need bright and shiny, this is not the place for you. If you're more English pub, you'll be in heaven. I only ate breakfast in the restaurant. It was very good.

The Tabard Inn is a historic Guest House /Hotel with a great decor and comfortably appointed rooms. The restaurant and surrounding rooms at beautiful as well and it reminds one of Private Clubs such as the Harvard Club in NYC. Highly Recommended!

I understand that this is a historic property, but that is not a sufficient reason to neglect basic upkeep, like peeling linoleum on the sinks and tub. The bathroom was not especially clean, and there is a rubber mat in the tub that is unappealing. There are no outlets near the bed, so I had to charge my phone/alarm clock at a distance (no clocks either). Just two thin pillows for a full bed. No fridge or TV. No elevator. The worst part is the life-size adult doll that stared up at me from the lobby area.

This is a charming place to stay while in DC. I've stayed there before and it's a unique experience. If you want a hotel with a gym and pool and long corridors with ice machines this is not the place for you. If you want a hotel that is unlike any other, with art and antiques everywhere, and a good bar and restaurant, then this is the place for you.
