Reesberghof - idyllically situated horse/holiday farm at the foot of the Rhön.

The Reesberghof wasn’t completed until 1996—its previous owner built it from the ground up as an equestrian center. As a student, I discovered this fascinating sport here, along with the joy of being able to move alongside these sensitive animals. In 2020, I had the opportunity to take over the equestrian center along with the vacation home—I didn’t hesitate for a second!
The farm is situated in a picturesque and completely peaceful location above the small village of Windheim, a good six kilometers northwest of Hammelburg, Franconia’s oldest wine town. Bad Kissingen is thirty minutes away, Würzburg is about a 45-minute drive, and Schweinfurt is a good half hour away. Our vacation home is idyllically situated with a view of the horse stable. It was built using a wood-frame construction method. On the first floor, there’s a cozy sitting area, a bedroom with a double bed, a bathroom, and a separate toilet. A wooden staircase leads our guests to the first floor, where an additional 6—or even 8, if necessary—people can stay overnight. The absolute highlight is the view: the entire gable has been glazed. This way, both children and adults can always keep an eye on the horses!

Farm Experiences

We are first and foremost a horse farm. About seven horses of various heights feel right at home at the Reesberghof. Five of them are our own horses, but two boarders also call this place home—we’re also listed as a trail riding stop. Haluna, Spirit, and Kennedy—a Mini Shetland, an Andalusian, and a warmblood—look forward to taking you on guided trail rides. Young children have the opportunity to try out our “Horse Adventure” program: they learn how to groom and saddle in a playful way, then get to experience a “guided ride,” and afterward help make the pony “Haluna” “stable-ready” again. Experienced riders will get their money’s worth: here in the Rhön, you can ride for hours without encountering a single car. What else is there at the Reesberghof:

3 farm cats

the lovable farm dog Alfi

a grill- and a place for campfires

a large area surrounding it, where children can play without any car traffic

A playground in the village within walking distance

Rhön Biosphere Reserve

The Rhön is considered a true hidden gem, as it is home to rare, endangered, and Europe-wide protected species, surrounded by nature that seems ideal for those seeking relaxation. Our deciduous forests turn vibrant colors in the fall—and a comparison to the “Indian Summer” in the northeastern United States is certainly warranted. Here, the starry sky is clearer because light pollution is much lower than in the rest of Germany. Couples, often accompanied by their dogs, also enjoy long walks—in every season.

Groups of young people are welcome here

The Reesberghof is a popular destination for students and young people who either enjoy horseback riding—or love our varied jogging trails. To each their own: that’s our motto here. The 120-square-meter vacation home can accommodate up to ten people with extra beds—it’s the perfect spot for a girls’ getaway or a fun bachelorette party.

Highlights in the Area

Hammelburg is located on the Franconian Saale River, which invites visitors to swim during the summer months with its numerous swimming spots. If you’re in the mood for a little adventure, head to the nearby “Wakepark Thulba,” where you can enjoy not only wakeboarding but also classic water skiing. Cyclists will appreciate the well-developed bike network and challenging mountain bike trails, such as those in the “Lange Rhön” nature reserve. Our region is also known for its cuisine and wine: Hammelburg isn’t just Franconia’s oldest wine town—seasonal festivals take place here, wineries are open for visits, and, of course, you shouldn’t miss out on a wine testing or two. Our region is home to numerous castles and fortresses—most notably the Homburg Castle Ruins, the most imposing in all of Germany. But the best part is that we have something to offer in every season—in winter, several ski resorts are about 30 minutes away.
