Blackbeard’s Lodge - clean, close to downtown,

Stayed two nights at Blackbeard’s Lodge — about $250 per night, which is pretty typical for Ocracoke’s high hotel rates. This is a locally run business, and after a recent mandatory evacuation for Hurricane Aaron, I didn’t mind paying a little extra to support the local economy. The room was basic but clean, with a comfortable bed, plenty of hot water, and a coffee maker (but bring your own coffee). Wi-Fi was solid and parking was easy. There’s also a pool, game room, and bike/golf cart rentals. Not luxury, but a friendly, dependable base for exploring Ocracoke. I’d happily stay again.

We were unable to find the staff for a long time at check in. It would have been helpful if they had left a sign. The suite had everything we needed, although I did find it amusing that they had a coffee maker in the room without any coffee. They have coffee in the lobby so it really wasn't necessary but would have been nice. The toiletries were basic and there wasn't a hairdryer but they gave us plenty of towels. The second bedroom was perfect for kids. The pool and game room made it very family friendly as well. The one drawback for us was that neither of the two TVs in our suite worked. So the room isn't the real destination. It's more about the experience of the island. It is a great older property with lots of character so if you enjoy a unique experience this is the place.

While our stay was comfortable enough we were disappointed in the conditions in our room. Some dried brown streaks running down the wall under our window and around our door. There was also what looked like dried food or boogers on the wall above our headboard. The pool hours were disappointing as we wanted to swim after dinner but the pool closes at 8:30. On the plus side there was plenty of hot water to bathe, the A/C worked well and even though it was peak season it was quiet and we had a good night sleep.

Staff wonderful. No human can control rain, hot weather, or humidity but the staff does everything else it can to make up for it----great morning coffee, advice, helpful, history, friendly, great room AC! We will visit again!
