About this property

Base Camp Hogan: Disc Golf, Hike, ATV, Views

There’s nothing like Base Camp; the night sky, incredible views, wildlife — all here! The river, and usually a beach, are a short walk from your door. Take one of the kayaks, or rent a side-by-side to visit Wind Caves and Chicken Corner — at less than half the cost of in-town rentals! There are unlimited hikes from the property, and many more nearby. But if you want to get away to a quiet, off-the-grid spot, that’s here too. Some folks just read, enjoy the wildlife, and stargaze.

- There are no stores out here; bring your food and whatever you'd like to drink aside from water
- You can kayak by the beach, upriver, and back down, or around the island. During snow runoff, the river may be too swift to use. It doesn't happen every year, but sometimes in May to late June
- This single-story hogan features step-free entry

ACCESS AND VEHICLE RECOMMENDATIONS
- The road is most often mentioned in reviews, which normally end with 'it's worth it.' It is a mostly dirt road that normally doesn't require four-wheel drive, but it does need about 6 inches of ground clearance. Most SUVs, Jeeps, and trucks have that. Most sedans and vans do not. In most instances, swing wide on the corners going up and down Hurrah Pass, and if you've driven a dirt road before, you should be fine. If heights are an issue for you, there will be lots of issues up and down Hurrah Pass
- As an alternative, call Twisted Jeep in town and tell them you're coming here. They'd rather have their vehicles on this road versus some of the difficult trails in Moab, so if they can give you a good deal, they will

SIDE-BY-SIDE INFORMATION
- If you plan to use one of the side-by-sides while you’re here, there’s no reserving them in advance. The property owner has 2 six-seat side-by-sides and 8 potential rentals. They aren't available for full-day rental; a 4-hour rental costs $250. Payment is by check or cash only
- You can use the side-by-sides to go to Wind Caves and Chicken Corner, where you'll have plenty of time to explore
- The side-by-sides are not for taking to town or the other side of Hurrah Pass. They are strictly for sightseeing in the area

Remote and Relaxing

I loved this place so much. I stayed in the male hogan for 2 days, and I'm already itching to visit again! The dirt road wasn't for the faint of heart, but it's definitely doable with 4WD. My 2019 Jeep Cherokee had no issues.

We wouldn’t want to experience Moab any other way!

Great place away from the crowds on land just as beautiful as the nearby National Parks. Tom was an excellent host. We would definitely stay here again!

Great experience off the Colorado River

The owner is a great guy, who went out there to get away from all the people and he accomplished that. Between the road to get there and the houses/hogans on the property. You can truly get away from the tourist rush of Moab and experience the dessert with just you and your thoughts.

Adventure, Authenticity and Awe Inspiring Scenery!

The trip in, over Hurrah Pass was an adventure in itself! Staying in the male hogan was like camping- but with a real bed, refrigerator and gas grill with a griddle. Tom was a gracious and helpful host. The side by side vehicles were indispensable on our adventure on Chicken Corners Trail. Campfires and stargazing completed our visit.

Secluded and Gorgeous!

The property is really unique. I wish we had more time to explore the area. To get to the property you do need a good off-road vehicle - the trail in is fun with a jeep. Nice little air conditioning unit in the hogan made sleeping much more comfortable. The stars were gorgeous at night. Thank you for being a great host!

What a great experience!

We loved our stay at the Male Hogan, the accommodations far exceeded expectations, from the size and comfort of the Hogan to the facilities and attentiveness of our host Tom, it was the prefect get away! We can't wait to return and explore more all the area has to offer. Whatever you do, don't miss a chance to hike with Kobe and Tom, and make sure to hang out at Base Camp at dark for a real up close experience with the local wildlife. Tom is a wonderful host and shares is knowledge of the area generously!

Once in a lifetime experience

We are so grateful Tom shared his property with us. The journey to the place itself is amazing, the property views are astounding, and we originally thought we would explore the town of Moab and other hikes during our stay but there was way more to do on Toms property so we stayed there to hike, cook, relax, and play disc golf. Tom had plenty of recommended hikes and it was nice to have our dogs with hiking while encountering very few people on hikes that compare to National Parks. Highly recommend this property!

2 weeks beautiful solitude

We stayed in the male hogan for 2 weeks. We enjoyed the views, hiking, swimming in the Colorado and driving. Tom is an exceptional host. Tells the greatest and funniest stories and he will keep you laughing (we still laugh). Bring a boatload if veggies for his tortoise. His team always helpful and friendly. We will be back!

Desert Gem

I can't express enough how special our stay was at Base Camp. If you love the quiet of the desert, seeing the endless stars of the Milky Way, or experiencing the wonders of Moab without the crowds then you will treasure your stay here. Tom is an interesting character and gracious host, as are his indispensable staff Collin and Lidia. Embrace the adventure of driving in through Hurrah Pass and you will not be disappointed. Base Camp is a gem in the desert.

Incredible location for semi-camping style

Absolutely gorgeous, incredibly remote lodging. Bring all your food and supplies, there is camping-style cooking setup (using outdoor grill as stove). Amazingly, even has a small fridge and a microwave, all powered by solar. It's possible to drive in with 2WD (I saw a couple standard sedans parked at the main lodge), but you better REALLY know how to drive if you bring one! I drove a jeep but never came close to needing 4WD low, it was quite easy in 4WD high.

great space!

Loved our time at Basecamp. The road scared me but after doing it 4 times...we got more comfortable. There is a coffeemaker, coffee, and coffee filters....but no cups! fortunately for me (and everyone around me ), the guys next door had a cup for me to use. With coffee in hand and the great views I couldnt ask for more.

Tom does a great job communicating with you and gets right back with any emails I sent him. The male hogan was exactly how it was described. My son and I had an amazing time exploring up and down the Colorado river. My son is already talking about when we can come back.

It really is an adventure!

Getting there is interesting, they aren't kidding about the drive! But once there it's great! We stayed in the Hogans and were treated to awesome views from the shaded verandas. The interior of both Hogans were exactly as pictured. We were worried about the bathrooms but needn't be, the outdoor shower was powerful and there was a utility sink with everything needed to wash hands, clothes, or dishes. Even with no beach, swimming in the river was great. If we're in the area we would definitely consider staying there again (as long as we had a vehicle that can handle Hurrah Pass with us)!

Off the beaten path

Last Hurrah, Male Hogan is just the place for you if you're looking to "unplug" and rough it a little. The property is gorgeous! It sits right along the Colorado River, you can actually see the Milky Way at night-so many stars, Tom and Brandon are "Johnny on the spot" if you need anything, we enjoyed hiking around the property, the Hogan was very comfortable- stayed warm even when it got down to 29F without needing to use the space heater. The drive is definitely intimidating at first and takes ~ 75 mins, but after a couple times, you figure out which way to zig and zag around the canyon rim and you get to see such amazing views. I would definitely recommend this place to friends/family.

Absolutely Amazing!!

My wife and I had an amazing time staying in the hogan! It was so relaxing to be away from the world, and Tom was an amazing host! Upon arriving, we didn't bring any food for ourselves because we underestimated the drive, but Tom was gracious enough to get us groceries from town so we could survive our few days there. The hogan was nice and simple, which was everything we wanted. We went on a hike with Tom in the morning and had a terrific time! We played in the river for the rest of the day, which is just a short walk away. We had a fantastic time staying here! It was very peaceful and provided a much needed break for us. We will definitely be going back! And Tom, thank you again for being such a great host!

Prepare for the drive!

The drive out from moab is something you should prepare for especially if you've never done any off road driving. The road is rough but the drive back is much easier just prepare for the drive up! The property was nice and peaceful and made the drive worth it. Tom was extremely friendly and had some cold beer in the fridge ready for us after the drive out. He was very helpful and ready to answer any questions we had or help us out if there was anything we needed. If you're looking for a place to just disconnect and relax away from the crowds or even people in general, I would highly recommend this property.
