Beautiful views, good food, needs uodating

I love Skyland lodge, the people are great, but the rooms need updating. The shower valves didn’t work very well, Internet is poor. But I love the rooms with the balcony looking over the valley. The atmosphere in the lodge is calm and peaceful, and the food is excellent in the dining room.

Love the lodging style; part hotel, part cabin, distributed throughout the property & aligned to take advantage of its physical contours. Sit on balconies anytime of day or night and watch nature safely - deer, birds, bunnies, bears, raccoons, and so forth - from your elevated perch/porch. Hike through verdant greenery, breathe the fragrance of wildflowers you’ll never smell anywhere else. Retire to rest in recently renovated accommodations with handicapped accessible restrooms, paved paths, and wide doorways. Dining is decent, offering at least one of every type protein - animal, vegetable, and fish - locally sourced vegetables for salads and sides, and a host of locally sourced sauces and seasonings. Desserts are outstanding and include gluten-free and lactose free palate-cleansers. Virginia wines and beers abound, and they’re all tasty! This facility provided the perfect spot for me to celebrate my 71st birthday in comfort away from the intense heat elsewhere in the state. Only a couple things I missed here were comfortable chairs in our room and non-availability of VA Bison on the menu. Add them to our stay and we’d be permanent residents! BTW, zero internet and cell phone service in our room and much of the property is actually an attraction here, not a detraction! Being off-grid is really pleasant!

Hotel in a State park

Had the hardest time finding the hotel. It was late when we got there so it was very dark & our rental car gps kept sending us down strange roads. The description on hotels.com site doesn’t say anything about being in a state park. That would have been helpful info. Hard to know where you are going while going up & down sides of mountains in the dark. However, once we finally got there the front desk person was apologetic about how hard it is to find & she was friendly. The rooms are plenty big & have patios. Country setting complete with your local deers & rabbits. Ceiling fan in room was nice also. Quiet, secluded place. Would have been nice to explore, but we were only there 1 night.
