Tucked away in the peaceful village of Saughall Massie on the Wirral Peninsula, The Shippon Barn is a beautifully restored 270-year-old cottage that once served as a humble cattle barn. Today, it’s a warm, characterful retreat, full of rustic charm, thoughtful touches and a few hidden surprises that nod to its past - from glazed owl flight holes to quirky archer’s windows in the bedrooms.
Inside, exposed timbers, soft oak floors and a crackling wood-burning stove invite you to settle in and unwind. Downstairs, you’ll find a stylish and well-equipped kitchen (with the all-important double Ninja air fryer!), a spacious living area filled with cosy seating, a Smart TV and blankets for slow evenings by the fire. A handy downstairs loo completes the ground floor.
Upstairs, three bedrooms await. The light-filled master bedroom features a double bed, walk-in wardrobe and en-suite shower. A second bedroom boasts a charming antique double bed, while the third has a fun double-and-bunk combination, perfect for families. The main bathroom has both a bath and over-bath shower - ideal for unwinding after a day at the beach or in the pool.
Step outside and you’ll find your own private garden sanctuary: a bubbling hot tub, comfy seating, a charcoal BBQ, and plenty of room for little ones (and dogs!) to play.
As always at Barnacre, families are at the heart of everything we do. From plastic cutlery and highchairs to baby baths, cots, fireguards and pool toys - we’ve tried to think of everything so you don’t have to. The onsite children’s play area is just a few steps away, and your stay includes access to our beautiful fishing lake and indoor heated swimming pool.
The Barnacre Pool
Our private pool is shared between the three cottages, but you’ll enjoy exclusive private access in pre-booked slots (2 hours/day, between 9am–5pm). The pool is fully heated and comes with towels, changing room, a toilet, an indoor hot tub and plenty of pool toys for kids (and grown-ups too). There’s even a sauna just outside the pool door for that extra holiday indulgence.
With sandy beaches, woodland walks, pubs, and restaurants just 10 minutes away — and the village pub right around the corner - The Shippon Barn is the perfect base for family adventures, friend-filled getaways and relaxed dog-friendly escapes.

– You’ll have access to our lovely indoor heated pool, bookable for private slots each day
– Your own private hot tub, perfect for evening soaks (available anytime until 11pm)
– The cottage is fully equipped with an oven, hob, ninja air fryer, dishwasher and washing machine for all the practical bits
– All guests are welcome to enjoy our peaceful onsite fishing lake
– There are some brilliant beaches, pubs, and restaurants just a 10-minute drive away
– Kids will love the play area just a short stroll from your door
– There’s free private parking for 2 cars, with extra space if needed
