Our Story – From Childlike Wonder to Something Made With Love
Discovery Woods began with two boys and a hillside full of wonder.
As kids, this land was where we discovered the natural world — where food comes from, how seasons change, and how quiet can feel big and exciting at the same time. We rode our bikes down the big hill next door and crashed into blackberry bushes, chased crawfish through the creek, watched tadpoles grow, and came home muddy, scratched, and smiling. The woods were our playground, our teacher, and our escape.
Ryan was the heart of those adventures — gentle, curious, and endlessly kind. He noticed things others missed. He loved the slow magic of nature, and he carried that wonder into everything he did.
Ryan’s life ended far too early, and losing him left a space that nothing could fill. For a long time, returning to this land was painful. But over time, it became something else — a place where grief softened, memories felt close instead of heavy, and healing quietly began.
Discovery Woods Farm grew from that healing.
What started as a single cabin became a promise: to turn love and loss into something that gives back. This land is now being planted with berries, tended with care, and slowly shaped into a working farm — not to forget Ryan, but to carry him forward in a living, growing way.
Our Farm Made products — especially the jams that will one day come from these berry fields — are part of that promise. They are made the way Ryan lived: with patience, warmth, and intention. Every jar is meant to hold more than fruit and sugar. It holds memory. It holds love. It holds the belief that even after loss, something sweet can still grow.
When you stay here, you are sharing space with a story rooted in family, remembrance, and hope. We invite you to slow down, sit under the stars, and feel the peace this land offers — the same peace that helped us learn how to breathe again.
Thank you for being part of Discovery Woods.
Other Things to Know:
This is a true rural retreat. - Discovery Woods Farms is intentionally quiet, peaceful, and unplugged. You’ll hear frogs at night, owls in the distance, rain on the tin roof, and very little else. If you’re looking for nightlife or fast-food delivery, this may not be the right fit — if you’re looking for calm and clarity, you’re in the right place.
Dark Sky Zone.- Kite is part of a low-light area, which means nights are *dark* in the best possible way. Stargazing is exceptional, but it also means exterior lighting is minimal. We recommend bringing a flashlight if you plan to wander after dark. The cabin has a telescope that you are welcome to use from the back porch! But please do not leave it outside in the elements.
A working, growing farm- Discovery Woods is in the early stages of becoming a U-Pick fruit farm. You may see young plantings, garden beds in progress, or seasonal farm activity. This is part of the charm — you’re staying somewhere that is being lovingly built, not mass-produced.
Wildlife is part of the experience- Deer, Bobcats, birds, frogs, turtles, and other native wildlife are common sights around the pond and woods. Please enjoy them from a distance and do not feed or disturb them.
Pond safety.- The cabin sits near a small pond. Children should always be supervised outdoors. Also the pond is catch & release, for the happiness of future guests. Please feel free to use the John Boat on the pond, but at your own risk. We recommend bringing your own life jackets. Children should not be allowed out without an adult.
Hot tub etiquette- The hot tub is professionally cleaned between guests. Please shower before use, avoid glass nearby, and keep the lid closed when not in use — especially overnight.
Limited cell service & strong Wi-Fi.- Cell signal can be spotty depending on your carrier, but the cabin has reliable Wi-Fi for streaming, remote work, or staying connected if needed.
Weather is part of the magic- Storms can be spectacular here — rolling thunder, rain on the back porch roof, and mist over the pond. Please enjoy them safely from the porch or inside the cabin.
Respect the land- This place is deeply personal to our family. We ask guests to treat it with the same care and respect they would their own — slow down, tread lightly, and leave it as you found it.
