It’s ideal for cyclists, hikers, and water sports enthusiasts (sailing, surfing, kitesurfing). But it’s also perfect for those who simply want to relax and enjoy nature. You can rent sailboats, electric boats, pedal boats, or rowboats on-site. The Steinhuder Meer is located about 30 km west of Hanover and, at 32 square kilometers, is the largest lake in Lower Saxony, situated in the heart of the nature reserve of the same name, which covers an area of 310 square kilometers. The main lakeside towns on the Steinhuder Meer are Mardorf, Steinhude, Hagenburg, and Rehburg-Loccum. The landscape is diverse, featuring dunes, peat bogs, heathlands, wet meadows, deciduous and coniferous forests, and reed beds. The boat rental facilities, as well as the sailing and windsurfing schools around the Steinhuder Meer, offer first-class equipment and professional instruction. The Steinhuder Meer has become a particularly popular hub for kitesurfing. During the season, there are more than 90 sailing regattas on the Steinhuder Meer. Steinhuder Meer is also known for the so-called “emigrants”—sailboats over 100 years old that can only be found here. Swimming and bathing in the lake are permitted and are great fun in the healthy heathland waters. The highlight is the 35,000-square-meter artificial swimming island in Steinhude in the south, featuring a sandy beach and sunbathing areas.
