The Hassan Ii Mosque is built during the reign and the directives of King Hassan Ii. Planned on the site of the former municipal swimming pool, its construction began on July 12, 1986 and its inauguration took place on August 30, 1993, after seven years of work.

Since the mosque is on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, the foundations required 26,000 m of concrete and 60,000 m of armourstone to combat the effects of the swell. However, the stability of the sea protection works proved to be insufficient and important works of reinforcement of the embankment are in progress since OctoberSubject to very strong climatic constraints (swell, humidity, spray), the Hassan Ii mosque, despite constant maintenance, showed signs of early aging as early as 1998 (cracks, falling of shuttering panels), the Associated Press reported.

For the construction of the building containing the prayer room, the minaret and the madrasa, twelve tower cranes of 220 t / m and eight mobile cranes were installed.

For the realization of the minaret, a crane with a record height of 210 m was set up. The structures of the whole mosque are made of reinforced concrete decorated with decorations from Moroccan crafts. The realization of the whole work mobilized about 10,000 workers and craftsmen doing more than 80 million working hours.
