Shop, wine, and dine on one of the world’s truly great retail streets, backed by beautiful and historic brownstones.
Welcome to Newbury Street, where luxury and labels rule. The heart of Boston’s designer shopping in Back Bay, this beautiful 19th-century street is packed full of gorgeous brownstones. Since its beginnings in the mid-1800s – when the Back Bay area was morphing from swamp to city streets – Newbury Street has been synonymous with prestige and luxury. The historic Victorian buildings are worth a look in their own right, but it’s really the shopping, drinking, and dining out that visitors come for.
From cold-pressed juices to the planet’s most selective perfume, Newbury Street is one of the best retail experiences in the world. There are public parks at either end of the street where you can kick back with your purchases and take in the Charles River skyline. Discover stores not just at ground level but hidden away on every floor of the street’s brownstones. Find the more expensive labels and haute couture houses at the Boston Public Garden end. The more boho stores are up the other end near Mass Avenue. Celebrity fashion has also made its mark; back in the summer of 2017, Kanye West opened a pop-up store here.
Things never stay still for long, as fashion-forward local and international brands set up temporary stores in the street every month, meaning you never quite know what you’re going to find. Over the summer the street hosts regular pedestrian-only days across the seven blocks, complete with festival-style events.
In the evening, Newbury Street is no less busy. Wining and dining goes on every night of the week and the global trend for craft beer, Prohibition era-style cocktails, and small plate dining hasn’t escaped the area. Best to take a stroll and see what takes your fancy.
