We are a bed and breakfast located in the quiet outskirts of Hida Takayama. We accommodate up to 1 group per night. The building is an old traditional Japanese home that was constructed in the Edo period, then renovated with the help of a skilled local builder and architect. Original antique floorboards were resized and rearranged for the flooring. The original beams and earth wall display the magnificence of traditional Japanese architecture. And rare, towering cedar boards are used for the walls in the hall.
The guest room consists of two tatami rooms, with high quality futon beds provided for each staying guest. It also has a private washroom with wash basin, lavatory, spacious shower, and laundry machine. Basic amenities include towels, toothbrush, hair dryer, shampoo etc., mini refrigerator, electric kettle, coffee/ tea bags, cups, air conditioners, and electric heater for winter seasons. No kitchen is available.
The lounge hall is also part of the guest's space, where it can be used for relaxing. It is also an area of the house that displays some impressive traditional architectural features. Breakfast is served here, as well as dinner for guests who request in advance.
The farm
We have a small patch of land used for farming. We grow seasonal vegetables relying on natural farming methods. Agricultural experience activities such as planting, harvesting, and cooking for staying guests are under preparation.
The surrounding environment
Utsue is a tranquil village situated in one of the small strips of valleys that extend north from the central town area of Takayama. It still maintains the nostalgic mood of rural Japan with sceneries of rice fields surrounded by nearby mountains. The town areas of Hida Takayama and Hida Furukawa, another small historic town is within a 20 minute drive, making it an ideal location for travelers hoping to experience both the town and countryside of Takayama. There are also several historic spots as well as hiking destinations within driving distance.
Getting around
Access by car is recommended as we are located in the outskirts of Takayama. The nearest train station is a 30 minute walking distance and trains run once every 1 or 2 hours. There is also a bus stop near the bed and breakfast, however buses also run only once very hour or so. Please inform us if you are considering to use the train or bus and we can provide specific instructions.

We are a family of four with a mixed Japanese and European heritage, and reside in a separate section of the building, allowing guests to enjoy their privacy. We would be more than welcome to communicate and provide assistance/ information/ recommendations during your stay so please feel free to talk to us should you wish.
