Not so Grand at The Grand

The millions spent on refurbishing definitely was not on the rooms, mine had several issues. No towel rail in the bathroom, missing handles on drawers, the Yale lock was loose and didn’t lock on inside, the TV had been moved and was positioned above the middle of the dresser and couldn’t fold back against the wall, so you hit your head on in when standing up, the room overall was all a bit sad.
TV over middle of dresser so you bang your head when standing up
Brackets but no towel rail
Dodgy Yale loose and no locking pin
Handles missing

Great location on the cliff next to the Victorian tram. Check in took nearly 50 minutes. Not clear why, we were just queueing for a really long time. The hotel exterior looks fantastic, the lobby and most of the public areas are also really magnificent. This is the grandeur of the Victorian era. Sadly most of the rest of the hotel is stuck in the late 20th century. Lots of minor maintenance needed, and frankly a proper deep clean. My room was quiet, comfortable, I loved the spa bath! I was less keen on the fact I could not lock the door from the inside (no deadbolt or chain, just a Yale lock with the locking lever removed...) There was plenty of hot water, my linen and towels were soft and clean. The whole room is very basic but for the price its perfect. My room was quiet, I slept great. my daughter was in a room at the other end of the corridor and commented on noise and not sleeping well. There is no AC in the hotel, there is a electric fan in the room and the windows open a bit. The staff in the hotel were all lovely. I think there are a lot of customers complaining a lot here and they do well to keep friendly and professional. I would stay here again but my daughter said "no way"
Public areas are very grand

Please clean the windows!!

I want to leave a great review for this hotel because I really want to see this amazing building stay open and be a wonderful place to stay for future generations. The hotel is an amazing property but has been turned into a glorified holiday camp complete with a bingo room and clientele you would expect. Decay has arrived and it is just being maintained to a minimal state with a small budget. I paid extra for a sea view but the windows were so dirty it was hard to make out the wonderful view. All the fixtures and fittings are basic but I didn’t expect better for the price paid. This is a budget hotel inside the faded grandeur of a Victorian masterpiece. I sort of enjoyed my stay and I really hope more can be done to enhance the building, at the very least clean the bloody windows!

Dissappointing, better to avoid

Great location and a nice view of the beech but no more positivies, really. My single room's cleaning was lacklustre, with missing pillow case cover, and a long female hair inside the sheets... The shower head was broken, with water streaming in all directions. I had a two stay booking, and as they do no room service over multi-day stays, all I had was a single tea bag waiting for me with the kettle. Single star hotels do better service than this.

Two nights in the Grand.

The Grand is a very old hotel. Even with the very best efforts of the staff. The hotel room (444) was tired and a little cramped. That said, the bathroom was clean and the bed was fresh and comfortable. I realise cleaning the windows would be a H&S nightmare, but they really need a clean. Finally, well done to the staff who have a very difficult task, they were always polite and helpful.

It is relatively cheap to stay here and you get what you pay for. So although the property is in dire need of upgrading throughout hence the cheap price there is no excuse for a poor cleanliness and hygiene standards. From mould on the hotel room walls to poorly cleaned crockery and cutlery at breakfast to a very poorly cleaned room. Vacumed around the furniture; crumbs, crisps and rubbish under the coffee table and chairs, sticky fridge top, coffee table and desk; from a previous occupant spillage I assume, not wiped down. The cleaner of room 451 needs retraining on the basic. Hopefully this was an isolated incident but who knows. Overall a poor hotel but cheap, 1 night was enough. On the positive the hotel is well located. Note to the management/owners - investment required in building and staff.

Inexpensive for a reason.

This was the cheapest hotel in town, so we had a fair idea of what to expect. Most of it matched our expectations - aging fixtures, a less-than-spotless feel - but the mattress in our room was truly awful, and there was only one very thin pillow (we asked for another, but they couldn’t provide). The building itself is lovely, though very tired in places. On the plus side, the views over the bay are absolutely gorgeous, and the breakfast staff were especially warm and cheerful. Overall, if you think of it more like a hostel, you’ll manage for a single night - but not much longer.

Avoid. Went with my young 6 year old. Kept getting told cant check in by one lady who didnt even ask for our details just said no eventually asked another lady who gave us our key. Tiny room. No air. Filthy and 2 huge spiders. After about an hours sleep decided we want breakfast. Asked at reception and she (same lady) told us its downstairs. Queued up with a tired 6 year old then was told need to pay at reception. Sacked it off and went 2mins up the road for half the price. Oh and the fire alarm went off twice unthe night so ended up in reception half naked at 1am to be told someone, no fire, just someone opened a firedoor, no apology. Travelodge or premier Inn next time. Ace time in Scarborough just not this place, avoid avoid avoid

Dirty and run down.

Stunning building and great location. However the interior needs lots of TLC. We had a fan in the room which did not work, the other was thick with dust. We could not open windows. Towel rail had clearly been broken off wall and not replaced. And paint literally peeling off walls…To name but a few. My heavily pregnant wife asked for another pillow which never turned up. There was no mirror in the room other than the bathroom, not ideal for a family of four sharing. When we moved chairs to sit down we found empty wrappers and other muck/dirt. Guests in the room above were noisy all hours with music starting at 3am. For the price we didn’t expect five star luxury but working amenities and cleanliness are a must!
