For privacy the Monarch is the 2nd of only 2 Casitas that were newly built on a ridge over looking the Rain Forest and ocean views. A 4x4 is needed. The Monarch is an 800 sq ft studio home with full kitchen, beautiful bathroom, comfortable queen bed, handmade cabinetry and large double patio doors. That open to a breathe taking sunrise over the rain forest. With mountain views, ocean views and forest views you can enjoy sharing coffee or fresh fruit. Just a few feet away is a viewing / yoga deck. Grab a yoga mat and start relaxing. The pool is steps away from this casita. The 35 ft x 17 ft infinity pool offers a great place to exercise, cool off or play time. Take a walk in the cool morning air along the road and take in the wonderful nature. The trees are often full of wildlife, as the monkeys and toucans visit frequently to enjoy the fruit and cashew trees while the bushes come alive with butterflies. Make sure you keep your camera near by. This is an adults only resort that has 2 casitas, where both may be rented with friends traveling together, or only one at a time for total privacy. (special request, if available). The open areas, deck & pool, are shared space. With only 2 rentals units, this is considered to be a private boutique resort... If traveling with friends the second unit can be requested at time of booking, if its available.

Casita near Manuel Antonio
We can't say enough about how beautiful this property is. The cacita is beautifully designed and furnished for a stay of several days or several weeks. The kitchen has everything needed, the bathroom has a great shower, and best of all a wonderful infinity swimming pool is right off the deck. It all overlooks the rainforest and Pacific. Phillis and Kayci were very gracious hosts and extremely helpful. Manuel Antonio is about a 30-40 minute drive. The entire property is beautifully landscaped and well cared for by their very kind and helpful gardener. The only negative is the steep drive up the mountain which requires a 4x4. After a day or two we got used to it and the accommodations at the end made the journey well worth it! Don't pass up this peaceful retreat!

Mountain and Nature Serenity
This property exceeded our expectations. What a delightful place! We stayed the first two weeks of February and had such a wonderful time here and along the coast. We are retired seniors from Minnesota. It was hard to leave. It was very relaxing being surrounded by nature and multiple trips to the pool each day. The pools is a true infinity pool about 5 feet deep and very clean. We just relaxed or swam mini-laps. Because of the location and trees - the pool is actually shaded about 2-3 in the afternoon allowing for glare free swimming. The property is understudied and looks to be professionally landscaped like a resort. The host's house and the casitas are distributed on the property with landscaping providing privacy. Our casita was very roomy and well laid out. The bathroom was large and had an incredible shower with stone walls. The casita is fairly new construction and is well ventilated. The two fans were adequate and at night we slept with none or one going. The road to the casitas is a public road with room for two way traffic. We went out daily and often often saw other traffic. The start of the road is flat but bumpy and the hilly part is well maintained. You will need a 4x4 or AWD SUV. I just placed the SUV in low gear and up and down we went with no issues. The beach at Matapalo is terrific. These are are no swimming beaches but wader and surfing beaches along the coast. You can drive up to the beach and park in the shade and miles of beach to walk. There is a very nice restaurant across the road from the beach and a little store with about anything you might need. Phyllis lined us up with a tour guide for the Monkey boat tour - highly recommended. We also enjoyed the Rainmaker tour, the Nautica Waterfalls, the spice tour and of the course the national park. We look forward to coming back someday!

The place is very clean, safe and quiet. It is located in a strategic place, where you can feel nature and at the same time with a view of the sea. It is very well equipped. The pool is very clean. We had very good communication with KAYSI and we felt very welcome! I highly recommend this place!!!

Very nice little studio
The place was great and just as advertised. The hosts were responsive and accommodating. I would recommended getting there during the day as trying to find signs to get the place proved to be difficult in the dark.

Perfect getaway in the Hills of Portalon
We loved our stay here. House was perfect for a romantic getaway. The birds were amazing to wake up to every morning. The mountain was fun drive up to the property. The care taker of the property was the best ever. We miss him already. He was very helpful in helping us find places and he took us to the local beach. My only recommendation would be to add a small portable air conditioner. We will be back!!!

Gorgeous and luxurious space, especially for a couple
The pool is one of the best parts of this property. The pictures don’t do it justice. We were lucky and didn’t have anyone staying in the neighboring unit, so we had the pool to ourselves and took full advantage for hours every day. There’s no A/C but you don’t need it when you can just wander into the pool to cool off. From the pool we saw a bunch of toucans in the trees, and at night an owl, some bats, and shooting stars. No monkeys but we heard they frequent the property. We were greeted with fresh tropical flowers on the kitchen table which was a nice touch. We were also given fresh limes from the trees on the property as a parting gift! They smell delicious from growing in the sun. Phyllis and Kayci were gracious hosts and invited us up to meet the dogs, chat, and watch the sunset from their house a little further up from the hill, which faces west (the unit we were in faces east). Stunning to be up that high. They also helped us arrange for private massages on the yoga deck one morning- really good massages at a reasonable price. The whole stay here was the most romantic part of our trip. Some other random notes: every single inch of this place is extremely clean which we appreciated! The bed was ridiculously comfortable. We kept the place cool by having just screen doors closed with the fans on all night. Loved falling asleep to the gecko chirps. There were some really loud bugs in trees nearby, but they quieted at night. As another reviewer mentioned, you should bring a 4x4 vehicle. We made it up in our rental car sedan but it was a challenge (in fact, there’s a sign at the bottom of the hill that says it’s mandatory to have a 4x4 if it’s raining as the road is so steep). If you don’t have a 4x4, stay in first gear all the way up, try not to stop, and stay on the parts of the road that have the least loose gravel. You can always back up and try again if you get stuck. We decided the place was so relaxing and beautiful that we would just make one trip into town for groceries and that way we’d only need to drive up the hill twice- going back downhill was totally fine and not scary at all. Finding the place was tricky because their road doesn’t show on Waze or google maps- so make sure read the directions from the hosts ahead of time, and note their direct contact info in case Vrbo doesn’t load. Look for the entrance to the gravel road that says “hills of portalón” and you’ll be on the right track.

Beautiful isolated property
First of all the location is just as stunning as it looks in the photos- dreamy! It’s not the best location if you’re hoping to be in close proximity to activities and the ocean but perfect for a few days of peace and gorgeous views. We weren’t able to get up the hill in our rental car so Kaysi was kind enough to come pick us up where the hill got steep and drive us to the casita and back down when it was time to leave. There was a problem with overbooking, we had tried to book both and had discussed it but somehow the process wasn’t clear so if you’re trying to book both casitas make sure you really understand how to do it. Like another reviewer mentioned there’s no AC in the unit so it can be a little hot/humid, but we just spent all day relaxing in the unbelievable pool!

Amazing place! The view was perfect! The hosts were just as great! Very helpful, they went above and beyond! They have a lot of animals on their property, called us up to see a sloth. Recommend them and will be staying here on a trip back to Costa Rica.

Beautiful Views
We booked with short notice and the owners were very responsive! The Casita is perfect for a couple,...very clean with beautiful views of the mountains and the ocean in the distance. The pool is very nice to cool off, refresh and relax. There is no AC in the unit however there are fans to help with air movement; it might be an adjustment for some especially when trying to sleep due to the humidity. The hosts were very receptive, helpful and friendly... We even received a message from the host when there were monkeys on the property (if we wanted to see them), which was much appreciated :) Be aware: Wayz & Google maps will not be much help finding the Casita!! We had a hard time locating it but the host was very helpful and talked via phone with directions. You will definitely need 4-wheel drive to climb the very rough roads up the mountain. I recommend this rental as we enjoyed our stay very much, and it met our needs for our time in the area.

Beautiful Sunrises!
Lovely spot on top of a mountain with a great view over the valley. We had a little trouble finding it due to some miscommunication while we were travelling. There was also an overbooking issue, that while inconvenient, was sorted out without much trouble. Everything was clean, neat, and modern. The pool was great. The bed was large and really comfy. The temperature stayed nice and cool due to the mountain breeze. Good security with combination keypads for the doors and cameras around the perimeter and the pool. We enjoyed our stay and next time we would book both casitas for our group.
