Founded in the 13th century, it is characterised by its historic old town with well-preserved medieval buildings, including St Mary's Church and parts of the old town wall.

The surrounding countryside is characterised by forests, lakes and fields, offering ideal conditions for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling and birdwatching. Particularly noteworthy is the nearby Märkische Schweiz nature reserve with its diverse flora and fauna.
