The room was spacious but the furniture wasn’t that good; desk chair chipped and grubby looking; TV in an impossible position to watch comfortably and had a smallish screen; bathroom was OK.
The staff person at reception had a diffident attitude. I had to go behind the desk to find him as he didn’t appear when we arrived. He was screen focused and appeared disinterested in responding to a guest arrival or to the details of my reservation. This was way below my expectations of a “5 star” hotel. The female reception staff member that we saw later was excellent - customer focused, very polite and helpful. However, my view of the hotel was already negatively affected by a first impression. Also the bar MC encouraged us to return for a drink after we came back from the concert. We did this at around 10:15 and the bar was closed!!! Again this was disappointing! I’m a frequent business traveller and like to support independent hotels, but sadly, when in Auckland again, I’ll be staying at a high quality international chain hotel.
