The Space

Neighborhood description

Northeast of Milan, prior to 2011, the yellow subway line terminated at Piazzale Maciachini, a wide open space alongside the highway loop at the start of Viale Marche, where trams depart for Niguarda and where one can take Via Imbonati or the Milan-Meda expressway. Today, Maciachini is a lively area, home to people of diverse ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic classes, with a constant flow of people at all hours. The neighborhood begins there, between Piazza Nizza and Largo Vulci, a cluster of residential buildings housing the middle class (mostly Milanese) and the working class (mostly immigrants) that stretch all the way to Viale Zara, which serves as the boundary with the Villaggio dei Giornalisti, so named for the concentration of publishing professionals who settled there starting in the 1920s, around Villa Mirabello.

This neighborhood consists of houses and small villas from the early and mid-20th century nestled among trees and greenery, some designed by famous architects, making it one of Milan’s most beautiful and under-explored neighborhoods.

Between Via Melchiorre Gioia and Piazza Carbonari, lies the heart of Maggiolina itself—an idyllic village of 19th-century cottages with gardens, nestled within a maze of flower-lined streets, sheltered from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding busy roads.



WHY VISIT?

To see Villa Figini on Via Ettore Perrone, the rationalist stilt house designed and inhabited by architect Luigi Figini (1903-1984), in collaboration with Gino Pollini, Italy’s leading modernist architect. Figini designed the workshops, the social club, and the housing for Olivetti employees in Ivrea, the Hoepli building in Milan, and planned the Harar neighborhood in San Siro and the Church of the Madonna dei Poveri in Baggio.

To visit Villa Mirabello, a historic noble residence in pure Lombard Renaissance style, featuring the typical brick pointed-arch windows. The Murat Sports Center, surrounded by a new park and a bike station, features an indoor swimming pool and a multipurpose arena for basketball, volleyball, handball, etc.



GETTING AROUND THE AREA:

From the apartment, you can get around all of Milan by public transportation: the Maciachini stop on the M3 subway line is very close by. The location offers great flexibility for easily reaching the city center via the metro: it takes just 3 stops to get to Stazione Centrale (from there, you can take buses to all airports, including Malpensa and Orio al Serio), and 7 stops to reach Piazza Duomo. It’s also close to the picturesque Isola neighborhood, which you can reach with a pleasant ten-minute walk—a neighborhood full of restaurants, bistros, nightspots, and lovely shops of all kinds.
